..and more inspiration
After my last post, many people asked me if I also had an inspiration for Yaki and Yumi. The answer is YES! Yaki is a combination of my Greek father, and Steve Buscemi. In fact, when I was designing Yaki early on, I had pictures of Steve all over my drawing table. Both Steve B. and my father have very funny and “over the top” personalities, which is perfect for who I wanted Yaki to be. We call my dad “The Greek Tom Green”.
Yumi is a mixture of my mother, and Jennifer Tilly. My mother is really into different types of spiritual practices (”well what is his sign” is often one of the first questions she will ask about someone) She is also very very girly and nurturing. Jen Tilly is aaalll woman, but a little ditsy. I wanted Yumi to be very much a girl, even though she is a dragon.

wow! your inspirations really come through. i see the qualities in both yaki and yumi that you described. i’m so impressed that you can create a visual portrayal of intangible characteristics. and that you can make yaki and yumi resemble their inspirations while not just completely mirrorring them. you always amaze me and then re-amaze me. i can’t wait to see them in action!
