Yumi takes her first steps..WATCH!
So, on my final day of production here on “Yaki and Yumi”, I thought I would share a special treat. I have dusted off my animation pencil, and flexed my flippin’ fingers to bring you..an animated walk cycle! I haven’t animated in a long long time, but had a blast revisiting the medium! Since there was not a pencil animation camera anywhere to be found (talk about a dying art form) we had to get crafty. Paul brought his digital camera from home, and we taped it to the edge of my desk on an empty compact disk case. We then piled up some paper, a trash can, and the top of a box, and taped a peg bar to it. We shot it in a program called “Frame Thief” and then exported it into “Quicktime”….CRAZY! But…it worked! Thank you to my mentor from Disney, John Ripa for taking the time to meet with me and make sure my animation was working. And to Larry too for his pointers. Thank you to everyone at Frederator for an amazing experience, and a dream come true!
note: downloading takes a moment..be patient ![]()

As I’ve been going to today’s comments, it struck me that Aliki’s been our most loyal, smart, and supportive creator blog commenter. Thanks for your always ready smile Ms. Theofilopoulos, we all appreciate it.

Yes Stephen, this is a walk cycle for Yumi only…and the horns and spikes and details will definately be added when she is cleaned-up and colored for final animation.
This is only a rough test to give and idea of what her movement might be like. I had a vision of a particular way of how her feet would arc up, and wanted to show the animators in Korea what I had in mind.

Oh I see… The artwork i saw of yumi in color next to yaki and yaki skeleton, is that how yuim is gonna look? No outlines and such?
On November 6th, 2005 at 12:00 am
Yup!
That is called “self color”. Basically, the line drawing is scanned into the computer and cleaned and colored..then the line is removed! The characters on Cartoon Network’s “The Fosters” is done this same way..except it is animated in Flash…Yaki and Yumi will be aniamted traditionally (pencil and paper baby!)

lol! Thats pretty cool. When i saw Yaki and Yumi i thought it would be a Flash animated cartoon by the look. I have never seen any traditional hand drawn cartoons that look the way Yaki and Yumi are going to look. Hopefully your experiment will turn out to be a good one. All the best,
hopefully i get a chance at my own cartoon

Can’t wait to see you again. Yumi’s got some sass in her step ain’t she?!!
On November 8th, 2005 at 12:00 am
Flat feet, a dragon tail draggin’ - she definitely has a little waddle goin’ on! I love how Yumi’s stubby arms are way up high so you can really see her little wiggle! I can just see her on Halloween, high heels, a tu-tu (or roller skates)…

Love that saucy saunter! Very Yumi!
