Yumi may be a dragon, but just like any girl, she is a sucker for great accessories…even if one of them is Yaki!

Yaki’s in trouble again…

So, yesterday, I had my repitch, after applying the various notes from my director and such…all went well, and I got some pointers on how to strengthen the story even more…The one misfortune is that many scenes had to be cut, because the show ran long. I sat down with my fabulous director, and pulled out scenes. One of the most difficult aspects of creation, is knowing when to let go of something you love, for the greater good of the whole. In this case, there were a couple gags, that both Jun and I loved so much, but they just did not fit into the edited version. We tried and tried to salvage them, but realized that we had to stay focused on the whole story, not just the one joke. Maybe they will show up on the directors cut!!
Here, for your viewing pleasure is a scene where Yaki [Read more…]

Hiya! It has been a while I know, but I am prepping to debut the new and improved storyboard, after incorporating my director’s notes.

Speaking of my director. I thought I would openly thank the amazingly talented and ever so hilarious, Jun Falkenstein!
When I was still a student, my class took a tour of Hanna Barbera. (I would later intern there as a photocopying,fed ex sending, expense report typing Queen of the universe) I remember being introduced to Jun, and she showed us a storyboard from Scooby Doo. It was so inspiring to meet a rawkin’ woman in animation, who was living my dream, and as a director no less!!

Who knew that 10 years later, I would have the honor of having Jun as the director on my very own creation! Jun’s directing credits include:

*The Tigger Movie
* Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmas
* Winnie the Pooh
* Scooby-Doo in Arabian [Read more…]

Here is another storyboard page for your viewing pleasure! Yaki was desperately hungry and hoped to get to eat something by getting a job at a concession stand. He was unsuccessful at doing this as he was constantly interrupted by mobs of kids ordering snacks. He finally lost it, and devoured everything!!…which also made it impossible for anyone to order anything else!! Yaki was very proud of his accomplishment… but consequently finds he is unable to fly!

This is Eric Homan’s favorite storyboard page as of yet..I thank Eric for having a great eye, and always believing in me and my work!

Phew!!

Taking Direction

August 10th, 2005

One of the greatest experiences I have had so far, was meeting with my awesome director Jun Falkenstein, and BG/Color stylist/artist extraordinare, Paul Stec. They gave me a lot of notes about how to plus my board and make it stronger, clearer, and funnier. I decided to show you an example of this. On the first version that I did, it is hard to see the action clearly. The shot I chose is the problem. Paul and Jun suggested that I change my staging so that the audience can read the action more clearly. In the new version, it is easier to see what is happening, and the gag will read better once it is animated. I am learning it is best not to get too fancy, and just keep things simple.

Hey! I’m HERE!!

Hi everyone…introducing…YAKI AND YUMI!!! A loveable, yet dysfunctional pair that I will be posting about during the next few months! This drawing is the first one I ever did. It was during a boring class, with a very boring lecturer. I highly recommend BORING CLASSES as inspiration to create new cartoons. It has worked many times for me! I am SOOOO excited to be a part of OH YEAH! CARTOONS I can hardly stand it! WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!! Stay tuned, tooned, and touned (?) for more!
