Mouthing Off!
Hey all! I promise to start blogging fast and furious once more. I promise there will be more posts! Better posts! And lots more images up!
So to get the ball rolling here is Teapot’s mouth chart. Since I haven’t seen any mouth charts posted yet, I’ll explain…The mouth chart is a guide for the animators to follow when animating the characters talking, singing, rapping…or in any way enunciating. The letters “A”, “B”, “C”, do not refer to the sound the character is making but is just a reference for the director to use in timing notes.
Scan your eyes across the different mouths in order and you can see it roughly animated.

Dahveed, it seems like “G” is mouthed out like “F”

Good evening Stephen:
I know mouth charting must seem a bit confusing. You’re correct in that the G position mouth has the sound of “F.” This position also has the “V” sound as well.
The letters next to Dahveed’s mouth movements and all mouth chart movements are only used to identify each mouth movement. It doesn’t mean these mouths sound like the letters next to them.
Cool? Talk soon.

Great faces!
I’ve heard this type of mouth chart comes from Hanna-Barbera, and is close to an animation industry standard.
The “l” sound obviously goes with the G face, but…
Could you give us a helping hand and point out which sounds commonly go with the letters…?
