Thanks To The Random! Composers

February 20th, 2007

Yet another great thing about producing 39 Random! cartoons over the past two years is the amount of talented composers who came in to help out the filmmakers by scoring their shorts. It was great to work with some old Friends of Frederator, but it was also fantastic to strike up new relationships with composers with whom we’d never been in business. For the most part, each musician was given less than two weeks to compose and record the soundtrack for a 6:52 short (and a few were working on more than one simultaneously). Thanks very much for your work, everyone.

Thanks Kevin Manthei for the great music on Flavio!

As some of you know, I started my career as a record producer, so one of my first areas of passion in cartoons has always been the scoring. It took me about 20 seconds to realize how little I knew, and that music and scores are not at all the same thing. A large part of my early education came from the man who consulted with many of our filmmakers on their first-time shorts (and with first-time scoring composers too), Bodie Chandler. I’ll do an individual post on Bodie sometime soon, but I wanted to give him his shout out.

Yeah Bodie rocks. This is the third short he has helped me with and each time I tried (unsuccessfully) to emote what I wanted to the composer, Bodie would step in and translate my words into “Musicanian” and suddenly the composer would smile and get it! It’s a beautiful thing! Thanks Bodie!
