Reactions

Okay. So earlier tonight we had the premiere (semi-) official screening of the first completed Random! Cartoons. There are seven at this point. The screening was held in the Nickelodeon gym on the big screen - certainly not the same as watching them on your TV at home. The mini-wing-ding was open only to the R!C crew, and about three dozen folks showed up to check out - many for the first time - the work of their fellow cartoonists.

So while it was an audience certainly with a different point-of-view than your average kid (the only audience besides the film’s creator we’re ultimately interested in), it sure is an experience to get the reactions of a group for the first time - what jokes you thought would kill that don’t, and hearing laughs you never expected, among other things.

I’ve seen these films umpteen times, and I still enjoy watching them. Even though we’ve got a long way to go (these seven films aren’t even a fifth of the cartoons for the season), congratulations to the filmmakers behind this first batch of shorts (Kyle, Andrew, Adam, Aliki, Anne, Jerry, and Pen). I hope you’re all as pleased with yourselves as you deserve to be.

Is there any chance of putting together a Random Cartoons teaser trailer that features clips from all of the shorts? I would love to see that!

Thanks for setting up the screening.
The first seven shorts looked GREAT on the big screen! Have no fear submitting these to festivals.
Not to put down the previous years of OH YEAH!, but the new RANDOM CARTOONS are the best set of cartoons you’ve produced so far (obviously I’m a bit biased). The films are all much better than the creators lead us to believe on their blogs - I’m still thinking about the color & art direction in KRUNCH AND THE KID and YAKI & YUMI; great gags in IVAN and MOOBEARD; the comic timing of WATCH THE KITTY; and the appealing surrealism of ADVENTURE TIME. (And HORNSWIGGLE looked pretty good too, if I do say so myself). Congratulations to my fellow creators - the first class of 2006!

Congrats to everyone! It’s looking really great and diverse and fun! Feels like being back in the ol’ festival of animation heydays before everything was all ’sick and twisted’.

Yeah that was a fun screening. Thanks Eric! I really enjoyed all the cartoons. I especially liked Adventure Time. It was so whacked out and off the wall and I think it really seemed like a window into the daydreams of a 12 year old boy which of course ain’t easy to portray. It reminded me a bit of Dreams of a Rarebit Fiend by Windsor McCay. Very cool! Thanks again Eric for setiing it up and showing these lil’ gems!

Congratulations everyone!! The first seven shorts ROCK! (What can I say, I too am a little biased…hehe) It was fantastic to see everyone’s work come together. Sooo many awesome, funny moments, great timing, and beautiful designs. Like Jerry said, GO “Oh Yeah” CLASS OF 2006!
Now when are we seeing the next seven?

Thanks, everyone, and I’m sorry I missed it! Maxwell/Mosher was in town, and any of you Squirrel Nut Zippers fans out there know it’s hard to catch ‘em outside of North Carolina. I hope there’ll be another chance soon!

The screening sounds like a hoot, but above and beyond, where the heck did you get those AWESOME pictures for this post?!?! Freakin’ cracked me up…

Yeah, that top picture’s one of my all-time favorites. The kids are watching a puppet show. Alfred Eisenstaedt, photographer among photographers. Tons of sites on the Web.

Watching our shows was an out of body experience…I am so proud of my fellow creators, and grateful to have been a part of the first seven! Like Jerry said, there are things I loved about each short. Congrats everyone!
