Okay. So earlier tonight we had the premiere (semi-) official screening of the first completed Random! Cartoons. There are seven at this point. The screening was held in the Nickelodeon gym on the big screen - certainly not the same as watching them on your TV at home. The mini-wing-ding was open only to the R!C crew, and about three dozen folks showed up to check out - many for the first time - the work of their fellow cartoonists.

Everything that moves in a cartoon (ex. Pen Ward’s “Adventure Time”) needs to be drawn and colored separately from its background. That goes for boom boxes (above), exploding ice chips:

I don’t know if Anne Walker posted this model sheet of Tabby from “Mind the Kitty”, but here it is.

Happy 100th, Animation

April 6th, 2006

Thanks to James Stuart Blackton and his short film, “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces”, today, April 6, 2006, we can celebrate 100 years of animation. I celebrated the anniversary by attending the final mix (where the sound levels of the dialog, sound effects, and music are brought in line) for “Hornswiggle” (funny how fate would have Jerry Beck finish his cartoon on this date) as well as getting a view of the final mix for Anne Walker’s “Mind the Kitty”. Both creators are thrilled with their films, which, along with winning the hearts of ten-year-olds, is the most important thing to us. So congratulations to Anne, Jerry, and James for jobs well done.

What, No Clowns?

April 4th, 2006

Pitcher of cartoon shorts DanO passively/aggressively comments elsewhere on this site:

“just make sure and don’ty submit ANY cartoons with clowns in them to Fred. no matter how aesthetically they are handled. clowns don’t work. people are afraid of clowns. this is an absolute that Fred went on at length to me about.”

You can read the rest of his semi-anonymous comment here.

Now, we get lots of pitches and can’t remember specifically DanO or his pitch. However, we do apologize if we led him or anyone else to believe we have absolutes here at Frederator (i.e. no clowns, monkeys, pirates, etc). Some places do. Maybe DanO caught us on a bad day, or a day where we got a couple of other clown pitches (like superheroes with wacky powers pitches or bugs in a rock band pitches, they begin to blend together after five or so). Or maybe we gave him our point-of-view [Read more…]

April Fool’s Day Fan Art

April 3rd, 2006

My Life as a Teenage Robot fan art normally gets posted on the Teenage Roblog, but since XJKenny has been such a big supporter and has done such a nice job on this holiday strip, I figured I’d throw it up here. He writes:

“Hello, XJKenny here,

Just wanted to send this fan art comic in
conjunction with April Fool’s Day, to show that I
still really enjoy and appreciated the show as well as
everyone in the MLaaTR crew that are working hard.”

Thanks, XJKenny. Sorry it’s a little late.
