Talk to the Snail

So lately I’ve had Calvin & Hobbes on the brain. Last week I picked up The Complete Calvin & Hobbes, a three-book set weighing about 700 lbs. It’s a blast re-visiting these strips, a lot of which I haven’t read since they were first published, way back before I was born. More notably, it’s been made even clearer lately that Bill Watterson and his strip have to be - along with John K and the Simpsons - one of the top three influences on the creators who pitch us cartoons. And with good reason. If I had a dollar for every time an artist said of their characters, “Yeah, they’re kind of like Calvin & Hobbes”, I’d retire to that cabin in Montana. If you haven’t re-immersed yourself lately in C&H, I encourage you to do so at your earliest convenience.
