January 26, 2006. I had a meeting with Fred and I was pitching an idea for Random! Cartoons. Fred asked me if I was working on anything for channel frederator…and I was not. ( How do I remember this date? Well, its a day before my birthday so i was excited to turn 15.)
I had been thinking about what Fred said for weeks.
February 7, 2006. I sketched some stuff in class of basic character ideas and drew them this date. Scanned em in, colored em, and out pops the first pass at the Ace & Aqua designs.
The next thing to do was come up with idea’s about them, personalities and how they would interact. As you can tell in the above drawing, Ace is beyond crazy looking, and Aqua just seems so humble. I liked the idea… Ace & Aqua’s designs tho didn’t seem to be very cartoony. I wanted to make this show for young kids. 5-11 age range.. something along those lines. I wanted tho, to make sure I kept Ace’s crazy look, and Aqua’s humbleness. I’m not sure what age group Spongebob is for but even I find it hilarious. So anyways I started to draw. These designs if you can or maybe can’t tell went through a lot of design work and changes. Ace I think I changed 3 times, and Aqua about 4 times ( those numbers are correct, I didn’t post all the reworked designs ).
My second pass at the characters was this:
But something about them seemed a little funny to me, at least ace’s design. So I started sketching out some more versions of him that I would try and find myself more to the liking of.
And this of coarse, these ended up being my final designs for Ace & Aqua.
