Geevil School Backgrounds–Before and After!
It’s a strange school that Sparkles and Gloom attend. One where the forces of evil and the sugary cupcake of love are encouraged to mix and mingle. When Anne and I discussed how we envisioned the Geevil School background design, we wanted to get an interesting storybook look, but at the same time, introduce some darker elements into the feel of it all.
Background artist Brad Gake did a terrific job of taking this concept of ours, and and making everything “meet” at the Geevil School. Kudos to our fabulous color designer Julia Kalantarova who rocked it with her rainbow skills and spooky hues.

The background came out amazingly! I love how one side is all happy and the other side is all dead and gloomy!

This whole short is looking great!
The only thing I don’t understand is why the skull on the banner is on the happy side.

I would think it’s because they’re learning to mix and mingle with each other. Go Death and the Happy Strawberry!

Love the bg. Did you use Flash or Illustrator to render the background? If Illustrator, what effect(or tool) did you use to achieve the rainbow transparent effect?

Hi Johnathan!
I believe Julia used the “soften fill edges” tool in Flash 8…most of our bgs are done in Flash so the animators are able to manipulate them if they need to.
