Sparkles and Gloom

Sparkles and Gloom: My Double Personality

May 26th, 2006

I have never been able to draw. Ever. Which is why I’m thrilled that Anne is my partner on “Sparkles and Gloom”! What I AM drawn to (pun intended) is writing. From a very young age, I kept a journal, and still do to this day. I was thinking about “Sparkles and Gloom” this morning, and how life experiences tend to heavily infulence what I write about. Sparkles and Gloom were intially conceived as I thought about all of the petty (and in retrospect, funny) arguments my sister and I used to get in as kids. Of course, I always thought that I was the “Sparkles” to Jessica’s “Gloom” (I’m sure Jessi has another opinion entirely!). In reality, I think everyone has a bit of the S&G in them.

So I wanted to post this diary entry. My LOVES and HATES as a 7 year old. A lil bit of the sparkles, and a lil bit of the gloom…

HA! I totally had one of those. I wrote it after reading one of the “Anastasia” books by Lois Lowry where Anistasia writes a “list of things I love/hate.” Good times.

Thats awsome that you still have that book!! Its funny how you mis-spell alot of words, and under the things i hate it says “Sppeling” ofcoarse mis-spelled. What really gets my attention about this image, is that this was made 4 years I was born. I wasnt even athought of imagination when you made this. Things like these I think about alot. -Steve http://www.stephenstudios.com

That’s cause you’re a YOUNG’UN. :P

That’s great! I love all the misspelled stuff. I really relate to your cartoon as I have two daughters who are a little more than a year apart and one is like Sparkles (also named Melissa BTW and also writes lists of stuff daily in journals) and the other(Megan)is like Gloom. When Megan was a baby we called her the Goth toddler because she always talked about how her dollies were dying and we had to be quiet for them so they could die in peace. When Melissa was a baby she would wear her Cinderella Halloween costume daily.
When Melissa (the Sparkles one)was about 5 she and my wife were sitting at the kitchen table and my wife was joking with her and saying “You’re my little monkey aren’t you” becasue she was climbing all over and Melissa (Sparkles) was being all cute saying “Yeah, I’m your little monkey, aren’t I? I’m your little monkey! eek eek! My daughter Megan (Gloom) clearly was annoyed at this disgusting display of affection and dry as a bone looks over at them and says “Well Monkeys aren’t very smart you know.” She was three. Sparkles and Gloom DO exist for sure!
Sorry for the long story but I thought you should know I LIVE with your characters!

Haha! Those are some great stories! I’m glad that S&G can ring true to other families, too :)

Fabulous, just fab.

This is so awesome…Jun and I are inspired to dig up some of our kidstuff now…I specifically remember a book I made in 4th grade..I will grab it when I head to San Diego next..fun!!

How could you HATE something that’s both GOLDEN and DELICIOUS?!!?!?!

Same as I love something that is both GRANNY and SMITH. The Golden Delicious were always so mealy and YUCK :)

Let’s see….the moment you were writing this, I was just starting as a freshman at USC. …..

..
AAAAAIGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!

You were very fickle as a child. I notice that Gym and Sandcrabs were equally loved, then immediately and equally hated. Which is it? Is it love or hate? And is it Sandcrabs and Gym or sandcrabs IN gym? I’m very confused by all this..I need to lay down.

Thanks for sharing this. My favorite little detail is the drawing of dark blue shorts next to the entry.

I’m wondering what’s up with math and swimming. You seemed to flip-flop on those two. Hating math and loving swimming and then boom! How could anyone love MATH!?! I can understand hating swimming- that nasty wet floor in the locker room, P in the pool, the used bandaid that inevitably becomes stuck to your foot.
