Background paintings by Seonna Hong
Color ships tomorrow. So here’s a few of Seonna’s gorgeous paintings of Ed Juan’s layouts. Keying in to the idea that everything in the short should have a rough-hewn edge, she painted these to look like paint-by-number kits. When we were first discussing the look of the backgrounds I was really attached to the idea of using collage (textures, wallpaper, etc.) with an unfinished woodgrain as the sky; all of which she used to great effect in Animus. That was until Seonna convinced me should could get many of the same effects with just brushwork. Also, that’s much more elegant than shipping a bunch of paper samples and scraps of wood to the BG painters at Wang Film Production.

A quick preview of the sweet colors and patterns that Saelee Oh came up with for Sam. Saelee is a great painter and illustrator whom I lucked into meeting through an internship. I somehow tricked her into foraying into cartoons and hopefully the vibrancy of her illustrations will rub off on Samsquatch.

Backgrounds look awesome! I love how samsquatch is colored and texturized! looks good!

Hey Adam! The color is coming along great! I was wondering how you intended to handle the texture on Sam? Will it move along with him or will it be that he is see-through and he walks ‘in front’ of the texture? If it DOES move along with him how will that be handled? Is it being animated in Flash?

Thanks. Samsquatch will be animated traditionally and the textures will be handled in the latter method you mentioned. It’s an effect I usually find very distracting but if the woodgrain or watercolor paper is fine enough then it should work. We also had to lose the tree design on Sam’s short pants as it was thought that, in wider shots, they would appear less patterned than, um . . . soiled. Which would be distracting.

I’m really liking all the greens in the backgrounds. The texture on Samsquatch is a nice touch.

This is one beautiful looking cartoon. Such a unique look yet it’s still cartoony without looking like it’s striving too hard to be “different” not easy to do. The main character is an awesome design and the BG’s are amazing as well. It’s Monday and somehow I’m filled with praise! Bask in it!

Wow, those are some damn fine backgrounds. Great job Seonna and Ed.

Thanks Chad! Oh man, Seonna did an amazing job on the color! She made my crap look like gold. GOLD I TELL YA ALL! GOLD~!!!! I can’t wait to see it finish Adam, are we going to have a party at your premiere? Are you going to dress up for the screening? maybe I’m thinking a bit too way ahead.
