Training Wreck
Popeye. Bluto. Hitting.
I was going to make some stupid observation, like ‘Gee, Popeye sure made a lot of prizefight cartoons’, then it dawned on me: all things considered, it’s surprising they didn’t crank out MORE Popeye boxing pictures. All these guys ever did was slug it out — why not plop them down in a ring?
Today’s flick is “Out to Punch,” wherein Bluto exerts so much effort in screwing up Popeye’s training, you just gotta ask why the big lug didn’t just put the same energy into getting in shape himself. I guess we wouldn’t have any cartoon then.
And, oh yeah, this is one of the many, many films to feature the sailor man’s famous ‘twisker punch’ — a unique inovation that never seemed to catch on elsewhere in the world of boxing.
