Heavy Duty

Man, there was a day when a pair of bulgy legs was your passport to cartoon stardom! Looks like old time audiences relished characters with nice big ankle diameters. Of course tastes change. I think both Woody Woodpecker and Popeye, pictured above, eventually had some kind of lower calf liposuction, ’cause their respective gams are positively svelte in later films. Little Audrey, also pictured, stayed true to her roots — never went the skinny legged route. Career be damned, she stuck with that chunky look, even as a fickle public moved on. Ya gotta respect her for that.

Who wouldn’t love a girl with big ankles?
(Send for my list.)

In addition to nice sturdy ankles, I was happy to see the chunky thighs on the female characters in “Lilo and Stitch”. At least in the cartoon world, women with a little more “substance” to their characters are appreciated.
