The Evolution of Ratzafratz! Pt. 1
Amazingly, it has only been about a year since I was sitting in Kevin Kolde’s Wow Wow Wubbzy production office talking about an animated feature project of mine. “You know, we have a shorts program at Frederator. You should try to put something together”, he said.
In the next two weeks, I wrote a script called ‘Mallrats’ and gave it to my friend, Karl Toerge , one of the most talented artists I have ever met. I wanted him to partner with me on this project. Luckily, he said “yes”.
I e-mailed my script to Eric Homan at Frederator, before any artwork was done. I just wanted to make sure that there wasn’t any other ‘Rat Roommates named Cyrus, Urban and Squawk living in a Mall’ short in production. Luckily, he said “No there isn’t. Could we see a pitch board?”
Karl started working on designs and came up with several style possibilities. In the end, we both decided that ‘Mallrats’ would work best as a Jay Ward “Bullwinkle” type of cartoon. The style was set and Karl began boarding.
To be continued…
