The most popular MooBeard sleeves suggestion was, for some reason, more MooBeards. To me, that’s like wishing for more wishes. There is one MooBeard in his sleeve, though, and that’s his dark, gloomy side, EmoBeard (I almost called him MoodBeard, but that’s too many consonants). That’s right, MooBeard maintains his upbeat, confident personality by hiding his sadness in his sleeves.

More dumb sleeve jokes to come!

So, for those of you who haven’t been paying attention, MooBeard’s amazing cartoon ability is that he can make anything he wants come out of his sleeves. I’m in the mood to do some crazy MooBeard sleeve gags, so I thought I’d find out what you, the citizens of the internet, would like to see come out of MooBeard’s mysterious arm-holes. I’ll pick my favorite suggestions from the Frederator board and from Deviantart and do some drawings for all to see.

What would you like to see, folks?

So– while all the Random! creators have had a hand in documenting their production, nobody’s talked much about what its like once everything’s finished, especially for a noob like myself. I thought I’d talk a little about what it was like for me following MooBeard.

So– while all the Random! creators have had a hand in documenting their production, nobody’s talked much about what its like once everything’s finished, especially for a noob like myself. I thought I’d talk a little about what it was like for me following MooBeard.

Both during and following the production of MooBeard, I pitched 4 1/2 more shorts to no avail. The “1/2″ refers to a Frog Raccoon Strawberry pitch which became another concept called January O’Kay after I decided that what I’d written didn’t match what I wanted FRS to be. The most noteworthy of these 4 1/2 is Weird Eddie, which I pitched and revised 8 times in total.

For nearly a year after the MooBeard short was finished, I lived off unemployment, developed lots of concepts, and pitched all over. Some people showed some interest. Some people showed a LOT of interest. Unfortunately, I was trying to have something for every eventuality, so I developed way too many concepts. While I still believe in most of these concepts, trying to be ready to pitch any of them at any given time was a terrible idea. It watered down my pitches as I tried to show passion for the idea while feeling like I had to be ready to whip out the next one. I’ll never again go to a pitch meeting with any more than three concepts on my person. And I’ll know ‘em all like the back of my hand, too– because I’ll LOVE them.

Today, I have a reasonably good job as a concept artist and a side gig drawing Kee-Kee Koki, a Puerto Rican comic strip. I haven’t been out pitching in a while, though I have a new concept that I co-created with Andy Paley (MooBeard’s super-awesome music guy) just about ready to show off. I’ve been working with John Berry, creator of the super-hilarious web cartoon Evil Josh and Billy, on a Weird Eddie short. Through some brain storming sessions, first with Arica Houy and then with John in the process of writing the new short, it’s far more developed now than when I pitched it to Random. It’s going to take us a while as we’re both constantly swamped, but what we have done so far excites me greatly.

And finally, there’s still MooBeard. Like all the creators, I’m still waiting for the sucker to air. As far as the short itself goes, while I’m still generally satisfied with it, there are a lot of things I’d love to go back and do differently. I put together a big fancy MooBeard pitch package for Nick, which only solidified how badly I want to make this show and got me more excited about the possibilities. I haven’t gotten my chance to show it off yet. I really, REALLY believe in this concept and I want so badly to make it happen. I’m dying to entertain and I really think MooBeard has what it takes if Nickelodeon (or someone else?) gives it a chance.

A warning, though, this show is not intended for children and can get a bit randy from time to time. Mature audiences only, please. Enjoy!

I should’ve made a post about this two weeks ago: Be sure to catch The Naked Trucker and T-Bones show wednesday nights on Comedy Central! It stars Dave (Gruber) Allen (a goof friend of mine who also plays Dark Blade of Fire in MooBeard) and Dave Koechner who you may remember as Champ Kind from Anchorman in a funny modern-day Smothers Brothers kinda thing. It’s a great show with a lot of heart, so be sure to check it out! Also, if you keep an eye on the backup band, you’ll see Andy Paley, who did the music for MooBeard as well as that killer Spongebob album, behind the drums.

(The above drawing was colored brilliantly by Verna Jääskinen)
Here’s the next installment in my series of posts about what you won’t see in the MooBeard short. The next crew member that didn’t make the cut for the short is Quill.

Quill, a porcupine, is a manic, violent woman who takes great joy in destroying. She comes from an island with a manic, violent culture. She also acts as MooBeard’s best rough-and-tumble guy pal, despite the fact that she’s female. Apart from MooBeard, Quill is the only other clearly pirate-like crew member, and as such is the most likely to think like one. In one of the early MooBeard pitch storyboards, Quill cut a circular hole in Dark Blade’s ship as he was going on a longwinded tirade. She has an Aussie accent, which isn’t to imply, necessarily, that she’s from Australia. The accent just seems to fit the character well.

In an online poll taken while I was still pitching MooBeard, Quill was voted the second-best character (with MooBeard himself being the victor), so it was a bit heartbreaking having to cut her from the story. Still, the chemistry between MooBeard and Sailor Bird pushed the story along much better than it would’ve with Quill.

When a legendary musician, America’s foremost voice actor, and the keyboard player for one of your favorite bands asks one to star in a music video, one generally says “yes”. Andy Paley and Tom Kenny have made a rediculously good Spongebob album called “The Best Day Ever”. They wanted to make a music video (directed by Jillinda Palmer of The Breakups) to promote it, and they asked me to star in it. In a Spongebob costume. In public. Ladies and gentlemen, my proudest moment:
