C-c-cuts.
So, along with my director extrordinaire Jeff DeGrandis and cap’n sound editing human of awesome Michael Petak, I chose the final takes of all the lines in the show…
However, as a result, I now know that the cartoon is running long. The cartoon has to run 7 minutes long, and I need to cut a minute or two of stuff! Having rewritten this cartoon so many times, it’s really hard to know what can go! How do I know that I’m not cutting the best joke in the cartoon? I mean, have you ever watched the deleted scenes on a DVD and said to yourself “Man… why did they cut that?!”. That’s what I’m afraid of doing.
That said, what a fantastic problem to have! “Oh noez! Too much funny stuff!”

That’s really too bad about the cuts- but I LOVE the drawing!!! The expressions are amazing! (still don’t know how you do that)

That’s a shame too. I never really knew Oh Yeah! Cartoon shorts have to run at least 7 minutes.

Love the self portrait. There’s a certain George Lucas quality to it.

I very often have to cut bits of time out of things. One trick I use is to speed up the recording by 7%. It’s small enough that it’s not very noticeable to the end audience (especially if you do a time-stretch only and not a pitch shift - it just ups the pace), but it’s enough to have significant return.
For a piece that runs 8:30, stretching the time down to 93% gives you 7:57. A savings of 33 seconds that does not sacrifice any content!

I did that for one line, but really it was too big of a problem to be fixed with just a little extra speed. Stuff really needed to be cut. I think it’s a tighter cartoon for it.

I told you that 2 minute tap dance routine was a bad idea!

You can always save those for the DVD.
