Re-Animation: An Evening W/ Lewis Klahr
I know I’m jumping the gun on this one, but I found out about it in the nick of time.
One of my favorite film-makers Lewis Klahr is having a few films screened October 16th, 2006 at Calart’s Redcat in Los Angeles, 8:00pm.
I was able to sit in (unofficially) on a few of his classes at Calarts during my time there, when I should’ve been in my animation classes.Needless to say, I learned alot from that time spent ditching those classes.
(I don’t recommend this behavior for anyone, but it always worked for me.)![]()
I felt a little like an outsider in the animation school because I was a defector from the Fine Arts department.
My first 2 years were spent in the art department before stumbling my way, somehow, into the animation school.
That said, my Cut-Out, Ripped up, Lo-fi animation was a little different.
I found inspiration in Lewis’s work, not to mention a quiet, secret hero/mentor. Seeing his work, made me feel like I was not alone in my quest for the Lo-Fi Revolution.
His work is amazing and those of you in LA really NEED to go see this with me.![]()
The Pony Glass (1997) film still
(this film isn’t going to be shown, but it’s a great still.)
About Pony Glass:
“Less fussy and far more transgressive than his previous work, Klahr’s collage animation PONY GLASS makes comic-book hero Jimmy Olsen the locus of desperate anxieties about sexuality and race. The film is so charged with fear and desire that a simple iris down to black made the hair stand up on the back of my neck.” -Amy Taubin, The Village Voice

I loved Lewis’s classes too! the best parts about Calarts are the Bijou screenings, the library and the film library!
I miss calarts!
Glad to see you posted about him!
