Electric Flag. And Howlin’ Wolf.

Continuing in a 1968 vein, Electric Flag’s A Long Time Comin’ was made almost at exactly the same moment as yesterday’s KLM pick, and mined a lot of the same territory with a bluesier vein.
And I’ve got to say, it took me years to realize that Killing Floor was one of the 50 greatest songs written and by one Chester Burnett, aka the Howlin’ Wolf. (It was probably the anti-Vietnam War Lyndon Johnson snippet at the beginning re-casting the title sentiment that threw me off.) The track hits the groove from the first downbeat and never lets it go. No one cares that Nick Gravenites is a white guy, Mike Bloomfield plays his guitar to prove his reputation, and Buddy Miles is so solid you don’t wonder why Jimi Hendrix wanted to play with him so badly.
I don’t think it’s nostalgia that makes me play loudly over and over. The original is amazing too, but is blues, is really rock. If you ever wondered about the difference, these two could show you.
And dig that techno-before-its-time ending.

PS: I can’t resist. The of Killing Floor is so great too…

Miles, I guess you have to like “Miles” of the world. So anyway, one completely useless piece of trivia: When I moved to New York City I was 17 and lived in a dive, a residence hotel called the Henry Hudson on 57th Street (now the ultra-hipster Hudson), where my neighbors were hookers, addicts, and old folk. So one day my roomate and I were unlocking our door when a big, hulking black guy comes up behind us. After the initial shock we got another when it was clear it was Buddy Miles. He was looking to cop, and when it was clear the two skinny suburbanites couldn’t help, he disappeared into his room never to be spotted again.

Buddy Miles is the shit - i can’t understand why he isn’t reissued in his entirety - until then i’ll hold on to my 33’s and listen avidly - incidentally i just picked up a limited run of one of his records “Buddy Miles Express” (which has the incredible clues track “You’re the One (That i Adore)”)- but come on - just ONE recrod by that man plus a greatest hits disc - i call bullshit

I am a friend of Buddy’s. He is constantly working on new material. He just completed a west coast tour. Check out, buddymiles.com to get you up to speed. I love him like a brother and it is awesome to talk to him about Jimi Hendrix and all the cool cats he’s performed with. He is a walking musical encyclopedic genius!
