“Brother” Jack McDuff.

Probably because of my organ playing white soul days in high school, I find that my post avant-garde jazz listening tends towards the funk. And for some reason “Brother” Jack McDuff is one of my funkiest. (Along with Reuben Wilson and Lonnie Smith.)
I reintroduced myself to McDuff through his latter day, past his prime, Concord recordings. A trifle for sure, but still rockin’.

And even though some of his greasiest tracks were done in his Prestige Records heyday, still has a regular place on my turntable(?). It came out in 1970, so I’m not sure if the double entendre was deliberate, but I sure hope it was. Makes it even more fun.
I suppose that if I thought about it I could give more props to some other organists but the brother always has a prime place on my party playlists. And at this point in life isn’t that the pinnacle?
