Country Cassix #2.

September 4th, 2007

Here’s the final postcard from my set of three “Country Cassix” (posted out of order). Ida Red is the name of a song but it got me thinking about all the great ladies of country music. From Mother Mabel to Patsy Cline, from Loretta Lyn to Dolly Parton, from Patsy Montana to Tammy Wynette, the list goes on and on. Got a favorite female country singer?

Loretta Lynn is still putting out great music. Check out “Van Lear Rose” if you get a chance. June Carter Cash was quite the prolific singer as well.

A useless piece of “Ida Red” trivia: Originally, Chuck Berry was playing “Ida Red” in his live set when he got the offer to record for Chess Records in the mid 1950s. He wanted an original, so he rewrote the lyrics, and poof!, one of the great classics of the second half of the 20th Century, “Maybelline.”

I love that Loretta Lynn song. I was lucky enough to see June Carter cash live a couple of times, with Johnny of course, and she was amazing.
And thanks Fred, I love that kind of rock n’ roll history.

Neko Case…She is one of our generations greatest Country singers with some roots in rock and roll also. Wanda Jackson is also another absolutely amazing singer(they call her the queen of Rockabilly..and she used to date Elvis!)
