Question.. how do they put the character sitting in the chair when its just a background. Like in photoshop or flash it would be layers, but how does it work if its only 1 background layer?
Well you can also do a similar thing with layers, just animate the character sitting in the chair then put the table layer in front, etc. Even if it’s one painting the studio can carve out the table layer so long as the camera doesn’t move. Even hand drawn animation is composited by computer nowadays.
That’s true..seperated like how cels used to be, but now it is seperated in the computer..

Hoo Weee! Those are some sweet bgs! I love the richness of the colors. So inviting. You got Jenny doing this huh? I would say she is arguably in the top 5 in the biz! Youa re very lucky to have her! Wow… just think if your bgs are that good how cool is this cartoon gonna look? Great stuff!
Steven- they would just register the character and not draw the areas of the character where the table is. Old school H&B.
I saw these as Mac was scanning them yesterday…awesome stuff! They look AMAZING.

Whoohoo! The painted BG’s look fantastic, Jenny! I say we make a good team, right Aliki? Very cool palette! And to address the question regarding how the characters work on a single layer BG, what we have here are BG keys, meaning they’re not the actual production layouts that are drawn in the proper field size levels, and all that fun stuff. These are mainly for reference for the people overseas who will be doing the actual production backgrounds. I hope this bit of info helps Sorry, I can’t help but sound like my old animation checker-self which I use to be before I got into BG design.

Thanks!!! And yes Stephen, the chairs never move, if they did, they would have been treated as a prop.
