Through the fine Dylan link site "Expecting Rain" I found your Bob Altschuler tribute.

I met him once in the 70's--he was a friend of my longtime girlfriend's
parents (here in LA) and one day he was visiting their house with his wife
when I was around. I think her parents thought I would enjoy meeting
him as a fellow fanatic record collector. I was blown away to meet an
a serious record collector who who wore a suit, had a powerful straight job, and seemed
very "professional." This was unprecidented for me--all of the adult record
collectors I knew were greasy, underemployed (if at all employed) oddballs.

I told him all about my record collecting, and I remember him telling me how he would tape his blues 78's and listen to them every morning on the train to work at CBS. It blew my mind. I remember he had one of the great 78 collections ever, and I think he gave/sold them to the Smithsonian at some point, if I'm not mistaken.

Your piece brought back some fond memories--so thanks. I'm still having a blast doing my rare record thing (www.recordmecca.com) and have a record/memorabilia collecting blog, mostly to stimulate web traffic (http://recordmecca.blogspot.com/).

Thank you so very much for your moving tribute to Bob A. I knew Bob since 1977 and worked with him at the CBS building in New York. We both lived in the same town on Long Island and used to ride the train together...with me always listening to his stories of Dylan or Miles or Barbara. He left CBS and I went into the retail business where we remained friends until he and his wife moved to Conn. I am so very saddened to hear of his passing. Again, thanks for the tribute.

Very moving. I never met the guy, but have been working in the industry for 25 years in Germany, first for BMG and since three years in the merged Sony BMG, and have read about Bob Altshuler in various books about the industry. He seems to have been a very good guy, old-school (Alte Schule), music-loving and on the right side. Good that his memory will stay on through your loving R.I.P.
