Time For Kids is running a list of the Top 5 Jobs in Animation. And they’ve asked me for a list, and a two line description of each job.

I figured our Frederator Studios community would be a better source than my opinion.

So, in your opinion, what are the Top 5 Jobs in Animation and why? They’ll probably edit the heck out of the answers, but be funny, be truthful, be real. We’ll see what happens.

Thanks, as usual.

Educational Consultant on ‘Kenny the Shark’.

No, seriously…What does that guy do all day? Is he supposed to be keeping all the information presented about sharks accurate…Did he not maybe think to pipe up when they decided to make Kenny walk on land and talk to little girls?

Top 5 Jobs in animation. 1 being the best 5 being the least best. 1)Drawing frame by frame 2)In-betweening 3)cleanup 4)Inking 5)coloring . This is just my opinion. -Steve

Being the creator of your own cartoon of course! Breathing life into characters who have existed only in the caverns your mind is the most rewarding experience any animator could ever hope for! Seeing them talk, emote, dance, or even pull their skin off in real time is soooo fun!

I’m with Aliki! Watching your characters come to life is the most amazing thing imaginatble!
Next in line–designer, then board artist, then animator.

I would have to say they are:
1.) Director: because you get to tell everyone what to do, make your crew do the jobs you don’t want to do and do all the fun stuff yourself. Plus everyone always asks you what the heck does an Animation director do anyway, and then you get to tell them everything there is about animation and look like a smarty. But seriously, it is a great job because you get to do a bit of everything.

2.) Character designer: You get to draw funny caricatures of people you hated in school for incidental people in the audience shots and have them be put on the air. What a way to get back at jerks!

3.) Bg artist: You get to put your name, or your girlfriend’s, mom’s, dad’s, best friend’s, lover’s dog’s or pet fish’s name on billboards, and on street signs, as the name of stores and buildings and have it broadcast internationally. How cool is that?

4.) Production Assistant: This is a great job because everyone knows that they end up running the studios someday. An escalator to the top!

5.) Editor: You get to see all the films that come in and watch cartoons all day, get paid for it, and even tweak them a bit too!

I’ve always thought that Voice Talent is one of the best jobs in animation… You don’t really have to be there for the whole process, but you are a distinct part of the finished product. And in the case of a cartoon series, you get to grow into the characters and put a personal spin the personalities.

Thanks everyone, including some of the emails that came in off-line. If Time for Kids uses any of our stuff, I’ll post it.

The idea is the foundation of every cartoon of course ,the storyboard is the “blue print’ of the picture . character designs and style helps . The director gets involve in every step …then TIMING IS EVERYTHING … Chuck Jones used to say: : ” a single frame is a golden atom ! “
I must add that animation is not the art of drawings that move but the art of movement made with drawings .

movement

I’d say storyboarder and voice over. then layout, animation and one of my favorites when it comes to 3d is lighting.

storyboarder and voiceover are the obvious - you get to draw but the same time actually create the story and set up the whole experience. voiceover… i just believe it’s hell of a lot of fun to do, plus voices are 50% of most animated moves. an animator gets to act, lighting is a lot about beautiful moods and beding the story and layout would be pefect if you follow a more graphic approach.
