Sometime next month there’s going to be an announcement of the third season of the Nicktoons Network Animation Festival (nee Nicktoons Film Festival and Nextoons) in August 2006. We’ll keep you informed.

The logo was designed (and redesigned and redesigned) by our pals Michael Uman and Luis Blanco at Interspectacular. The one on the top right is the final.

I just checked out their website, and they are sooo goood!!!

This year would it be possible to give the people submitting material a better idea of what S&P will accept? I think Eric and Melissa have tried to explain what they wanted in selections, but what they tell us is often too vague to be useful. Since effort and time consumpion are so critical to an individual project,(which will probably never pay for its self), it would be better to have more guidance.
Another question I’ve wanted to ask is what role does union affiliation play in selection? I’ve read some of Local 839’s studio contracts on line. I assume you have extra rules to permitt student submissions, but what about self taught animators that one can found on line more and more?

Hi, Droopy. The Nicktoons Network is a sister station to Nickelodeon and pretty much goes by the same guidelines Nick does when it comes to Standards and Practices. There’s no bible as to what’s acceptable in each and every instance, but no cursing, drugs, sex, extreme violence, “imitatable behavior”, etc. We’ll post something on the Film Festival Website (which will launch next month) to define more clearly what’s not allowable. The majority of films we include are shorts already completed and not made specifically for the Festival. My advice is if you’re going to produce a cartoon specifically for the Festival and are unsure whether a moment of your short is Standards-safe, then re-think it. Also, as in the case of most (if not all) film festivals, union affiliation plays no role in selection. Thanks for your interest.

Sorry about my spelling. My seeing eye dog isn’t helping today.

Thanks for the reply.

I’ve read John K’s critisims on show bibles. He makes some excellent points, but I’m starting to think a show bible could give more clarity to what S&P will enforce. The same standards seem to be enforced whether there’s a show bible or not. So far the best source I’ve been able to find on editorial policy is a listing all of Nick’s and the other networks cartoon edits. Here’s a link. http://looney.goldenagecartoons.com/ltcuts/

Being old enough to remember locally broadcast live kiddy shows, with music, puppets, and unedited Warner and Fleischer cartoons, the standards of editing are perplexing.
