Flavio Toy
I guess I got a lil’ too much time on my hands and when that happens I start to make stuff. Sometimes it’s music, sometimes it’s a cartoon and sometimes I make toys.
For lack of something better to do, and inspired by Eric Robles’ maquette, I decided to make a Flavio toy just for the heck of it.
As we really didn’t have a lot of money growing up, my mom showed me a way to make my own toys. I have made quite a few of these over the years and I call them Bendanimals.
As you can see Flavio is more or less poseable due to the armature inside him. He’s sort of a crossbreed between a stuffed animal and a bendable toy.
I hope you like it!

Glad you like it Stephen!

That is SO AWESOME!! You should post a tutorial (with more detail) on how to do that.
Very cool.
On September 19th, 2006 at 12:00 am
And give away my secrets? Hmmm… maybe. But if I do, someone’s GOT to swear to make one!
On September 19th, 2006 at 12:00 am
That is really awasome! You should mass produce these and sell them on the internet! (In addition, you could probably make a stopmotion Flavio cartoon with this)

Hey Avi! Thanks for the kind words about the Flavio toy. Yeah as I posted below, I’d LOVe to market this but I don’t have the rights. I’ve thought about making other characters and doing it but I don’t know WHERE to get it mass produced and don’t have the cash flow to fund it either. Ahh well… they are fun to make. And yes I could do a stop motion one I guess. Maybe someday I will do something like that.

Oh my gosh!! That is awesome! I’m wondering too–what is that wrapped around the wire? Too cute!

Thanks Anne! It’s Self Adhesive Sport Guaze which is normally used for sprains and strains. It sticks to itself which makes it a perfect tool for this.

DUDE! THAT IS THE COOLEST THING EVER! I LOVE THAT YOU DID THAT! There is no feeling in the world like holding a toy of one of your own creations. I had a friend of mine who is a toy sculptor make me a bunch of maquettes of my characters and I’ve been moist ever since. Frickin’ awesome job man! Now make a Bronk and Bongo. You aren’t that busy right?
On September 19th, 2006 at 12:00 am
Someone made you maquettes of your characters? That’s cool! Of Bronk and Bongo or other characters? Post them! I’d love to see them. I think I might just make a Flavio maquette next. Either that or maybe as stuffed animal. I’m not sure just yet. As for making a Bronk and Bongo one, it takes a lot of time and materials so I think I’ll pass for now. I need to focus on finding full time work right now. If I get some time maybe I will do one for you though! I’ll tell you what… find me a job and I will make you one for sure!
On September 19th, 2006 at 12:00 am
Why don’t you explain how you made him. What materials. Sculpy? What is that bandages underneath? I love how the hands work to suit every pose. Again, nice work…When I saw the first picture it looked like a walk about character. Full size man-suit thingy.
On September 19th, 2006 at 12:00 am
Okay I guess I can talk about how it’s all made. I will do another post in the next day or so. Look for it. But as I said to Art, if I tell you all how to make them someone HAS to actually make one and post a pic of it.

OMG, OMG!!!
I want one! This is so cool!!!
Probably before you were born Jack in the Box resturants had what they called “Bendable Buddies”. They were tha J&B Characters, Yes they had Characters way back when, that they gave away with a purchase. I remember these foundly!! Thanks for bringing back a great memory!!!
Market these!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please!

Hey Jeff, yeah I kinda remember the characters but not the toys. I used to have all sorts of “bendings” as I called them. Gumby and Pokey, Popeye, Tom and Jerry, Mickey, Donald, Goofy and a host of other characters too. That’s one reason I wanted to make my own! Thanks for the kind comment tho’ I’d make these if I was allowed to sell them for sure! they are a tad pricey to make tho as they take about a day to do. Maybe God will smile down upon me and make my short a series and I will be able to do just that. Then again maybe not…
On September 19th, 2006 at 12:00 am
That looks great! Maybe Fred and crew will spring for some limited edition swag from a few of the shows? I’d buy one of these. We’ve already got a print out of the character line-up from your show hanging in our office.
On September 19th, 2006 at 12:00 am
Thanks Floyd! That’s very cool that you have Flavio on your wall! Thanks for that! Well I sure would love to make some more of these but they’re not terribly cheap so I doubt that Frederator will want to waste it’s money on something of this nature. Better to greenlight more shorts huh?
But again, I could easily (and would LOVE) to do all the characters in the Random series!

Leonardo would be proud!! Flav, what do you think of your bendable effigy!? Awesome!
To quote some of your predecessors - “I tell you once, I tell you twice, I tell you THREE times! You’re a Righteous DUDE!”
