Flavio Early Designs pt.2
Here are a few more early designs I thought I had lost but found yesterday cleaning up my slob of a studio. You can see the first bit of designs I did here.
This first design is sort of there but in it I was trying to get that long neck goats have. Clearly it didn’t work. the other guy is a patron I had Flavio interact with in the story which had to be cut for time. You can see the cut storyboards here if you like.
For some reason I saw Flavio as a rabbit when I first thought of him. I think it’s because I had an idea back when I was doing the What A Cartoon shorts called The Bunny Bros. I thought up with my friend Harry McLaughlin.
More rabbit designs. A bit too designy for me, what with the bone-shaped head. Besides, enough already with the rabbits, it’s been done to death!
Now we’re getting somewhere. The dot eyes, the tufts of hair on his cheeks and of course the goat design. He’s still a little squat and short, plus he’s got on some sort of sailor suit (not sure WHAT I was going for there) but he’s definitely getting closer to my final design.
At the bottom of the page, I am finally getting the design I like. He’s still a bit off and it would take me another three or four revisons to get him just right but he’s pretty much what I ended up with. (sans the odd sailor suit) Flavio is born!

Thanks Stephen. Well they’re not technically “revisions” so much as me exploring what the character should have looked like. They were just doodles and the whole process probably only took about an hour at the most.

Thanks Jeaux! I wish more of the other creators would post their unused designs too. I love to see the thought process that led up to their characters design and why they chose that final design. Everyone seems to do it different and I think it’s a great learning experience to see how they go about it but I also just like to geek out on it. Kind of the “end of the road” for most of us so I don’t know if we’ll see much of that.
