Flavio Hands

May 25th, 2006

We all know the saying that “the eyes are the window to the soul”. That may be true but I have always felt that the hands are the doorway because we use them to express so many different emotions.

You can say you love someone with a hand gesture, or tick them off or make them sad all with no words and just your hands.

For Flavio hand gestures are especially important because of his Italian roots. Back in Jersey they used to tell the joke once that said “If you want to shut an Italian up, hold his hands.” Funny and yet it tells me that people expect Italians to use their hands.

Anyway, enough of the philosophical crap. I drew these hands so the Overseas studio would follow how I want them. As Tony Soprano would say (using his finger as an exclamation point I might add)
“END OF STORY!”

Dont put your hand up at me!! -Steve Cool hands ;) http://www.stephenstudios.com

Nice hand sheet. It reminds me of the sheet of Merlin’s hands from “The Sword in the Stone”, as drawn by Milt Kahl. You can see those here: http://www.freewebs.com/gnomak/Milt_Hands-1.jpg

Thanks Floyd! I love those Milt Kahl hand drawings as well. I have a few old print outs from a friend who used to collect Disney model sheets and I also have the Illusion of life which has some as well. I’ve studied those inside and out because I really do believe that to get a decent acting sequence you need to draw hands well. I am honored that you’d even put my drawings and Milt’s in the same sentence! I think the major difference is the costruction (and that mine aren’t as good). Milt was trying to make them be more or less ralistic hands and with Flavio he only has two fingers and a thumb which I have found to be difficult to pose because sometimes you use those end fingers as a little accent on the pose and with Flavio it’s not there. Plus I was trying to add a bit of cartooniness to his hand poses as well and make them a bit graphic. Anyway, thanks for the kind comment!

The first of your 3 dont work Floyd.

I got them all Stephen, no problem.

I accidently had “and here” in the link :) -Steve http://www.stephenstudios.com

Wait mike, were these done digitally on the computer?

Nope, drawn with a Carmine Red Col-erase pencil and scanned in for the blog.
