Fanboy and Chum Chum

A bit of the Eric Robles story.

Creator Eric Robles and head writer/executive producer Steve Tompkins were in New York today visiting Nickelodeon HQ and spending them with the dozens of people who take up a show after it’s produced. Programmers, marketers, press and promo folks all gathered together to tell us more about what they’re doing to let America know about “Fanboy & Chum Chum.”

Anne Mullen, Nickelodeon promotion honcho, saw on the PR sheet that Eric’s story was a possible pitch to newspapers and magazines, and wondered exactly what his “story” was anyway. So, as Eric was telling them his path into the biz I started up my crappy phone video. The quality’s not too good so I’ll transcribe it below.

Eric drew his first fan drawings of Superman for friends in the first grade in a not so good neighborhood in Los Angeles. The son of Mexican immigrants, he lived in one room [Read more…]

That’s Eric and Jamie Kennedy, the voice of Kyle, above, signing posters. Boy, looking at these pictures, it’s kind of hard to believe Eric Robles would’ve come up with a character named Fanboy, huh?

Fanboy Poster at Comic-Con

Fanboy and Chum Chum Promotional Poster

Hey, are you going to Comic-Con in San Diego this week? Well, if you are, you’re nuts. And, if you’re nuts you’ll want to swing by the big Nickelodeon booth (#4113) at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday to schmooze with Mr Eric Robles, the famous creator of Fanboy and Chum Chum. If you’re real nice, he’ll even sign one of these exclusive posters, above, for you (image not to size!).

The poster was roughed out by Eric and rendered by the Nick CG department before Chad Woods colored it and added the effects.

Yo’s Bedroom

Yo's Room

While a finished, rendered CG image is a bit away from completion, I figured I’d post a bunch of concept art for Yo’s bedroom from episode #138, “The Incredible Shrinking Fanboy”. The work began when Eric Robles, to whom girls’ bedrooms are unknown territory, asked Niki Yang to come up with a few ideas for the look of Yo’s room. Here you can see a pair of Niki’s original rough concepts, followed by Eric’s somewhat less roughs, and wrapped up with Caesar Martinez’s clean-ups. Then there’s Caesar’s overhead turn to help the CG group figure out what goes where (and which pieces can be re-u$ed from previous episodes). Chucked in at the bottom are also a few elements drawn by Caesar and colored Chad Woods with a little help from Kyle Neswald. The color on Caesar’s image above is also by Chad.

First Studio Screening

May 6th, 2009

Fanboy and Chum Chum Screening

Well, we had our first in-studio screening of Fanboy and Chum Chum yesterday afternoon. The showing - limited to just the crew but, as you can see, attracted many other folks, too - featured the very first completed episode, “Dollar Day”. Mr Eric Robles gave a little speech as well as two big thumbs up for the proceedings. There’s still no premiere date set, but look for the series to hit Nick sometime in the late summer/early fall.
