Scrivener Elf…the details.
Once all the fun character concepts on Fanboy have been approved (see below) , it’s time for the real work to begin….turnarounds mouthcharts and expressions.
Concepts for the Scrivener Elf.
Cleanup with temporary color
Turnarounds: Here’s where you find all the flaws in your design. Some things might look cool in a 3/4 pose, but fall apart in a turn. You can’t really employ a lot of cheats you can in 2d. Things have to work in a very volumetric way so that the cg modelers can make things work properly. So it’s very important to get these right. I was really happy that the Robin Hood Daffy shoes (one of my favorite toons) made it through.
Mouthcharts: These are pretty standard, but fun too. Especially when the characters have really goofy teeth….which we love in spades on Fanboy. Perfect teeth are boring. The more screwed up, the better.
Expressions: Outside of concept, I think this is the second area that are the most fun. Taking a character and putting him through his paces is really educational, and helps you get it touch with his/her character’s personality. In this case, the scrivener Elf is Kyle’s disgruntled assistant/ slave. I pictured him as being a wisecracking smart ass…intelligent, and slightly evil…but also incredibly timid when confronted with danger.
Guess that’s about it for now. Back with more posts soon!
