It All Starts With Sausage People

January 15th, 2008

This, my friends, is a sausage person. The basic building block to any figure drawing. And guess what?

This sausage person was drawn by a 12 year old!

Back in the spring, Dan and Fred decided to do a sober version of Drinking and Drawing with a 5th grade class. The idea was for them to get a basic understanding of how animation works. They each drew 8 cards of a dance movement.
But that’s not my point. My point is that ANYONE can do this. A lot of people are hesitant to attend or sign up for Drinking and Drawing because they think they can’t draw. To that I say “PSHAW!” We welcome illustrators, animators, filmmakers, cartoon fans and ANYONE to draw. Trust me folks, this is no “Fantasia”. It’s just good fun! - Carrie

Drinking and Drawing with Gorillas.

January 14th, 2008

When you come to the Drinking and Drawing party next week, you will be entering a jungle. This time the animated film that everyone is welcome to jam on will have a gorilla theme running through it. There will also be a live gorilla on stage. Clearly we are kicking the insanity up a notch from our last Drinking and Drawing party in Portland.

What a bunch of starters!

January 12th, 2008

After Dan Meth made his first Drinking & Drawing cartoon, we decided to launch an animator collective jam session event, and what better place than the Platform Animation Festival?

So, last June, we gathered a few hundred intrepid souls to make a film. The starting line-up? Bill Plympton, Patrick Smith, Dan Meth, David Levy, Lee Rubenstein, and Jerry Beck! Wow!!!!!! Check out some of the other action. And check out the cartoon everyone made.

And remember, D+D comes to NY for it’s first monthly event on January 23, 2008. It’s free and anyone can come.

Just How Does Drinking and Drawing Work?

January 11th, 2008

Drinking and Drawing is a super-fun animated jam where animators and animation fans get together to draw and mingle. Those who join in the drawing fun participate in the creation of a film in just one night! Here’s how it happens:

Groups of animators are called up to the drawing area, 10 at a time. Each animator receives 8 blank note cards, as well as the last card from the animator that drew before them. They have exactly 10 minutes (that’s 75 seconds a card) to continue the animation on each card. At the end of that 10 minutes, all of the animators are kicked out of their seats (really, no lollygaging) and a new batch is called to the table.

It ends up being a high-paced musical chairs way of doing an animation, and it’s loads of fun! Plus, by the end of the night, we have a short film (about [Read more…]

When Dan came in the morning after…

January 10th, 2008

Dan told me about ‘Drinking and Drawing’ when he came in the studio the morning after.

He went out to the bar of one of our colleagues on the Lower East Side of New York with a light box, a pile of white index cards, and an intern (Lee Rubenstein, now the production designer at Next New Networks). Dan and Lee ordered some beer and Dan was determined to finish drawing an animated film by hand in one sitting.

At first I thought he was crazy. But just for a minute or two.

As he showed me the drawn index cards and Lee played a little video he’d shot during the course of the night it all seemed cooler and cooler. Dan always has great ideas and this one was just crazy and great enough to work. One by one the drawings kept getting funnier and schizier and I knew with Dan’s skills it [Read more…]

Attention New Yorkers!

That’s right, ‘Drinking and Drawing’ comes to New York City. Everyone’s invited. The first 100 artists who register become part of the night’s cartoon. Tune in to this space for updates.
