The Museum of Natural Mystery

This post is not about cartoons but it is. Once in a while, every cartoonist needs a jolt of inspiration. There’s no better place to get inspired in New York than the Museum of Natural History. It has some of the weirdest, most amazing items on earth, such as that gruesome fish up there. I went there this weekend with my camera and collected future cartoon material. Here’s a couple examples:

Look at these guys from Bali.

If George Lucas directed a Spongebob movie it might look like this.

How much would it suck to have a mandrill loose in your apartment?

Have you ever heard of Hiroshi Sugimoto? He did a series of photographs called “Dioramas” in 1976 that almost made such still displays from natural history museums seem real-to-life.

It’s pretty cool… determining what’s “real” and what’s not.

If you’re in Texas, this exhibit is actually on display at Fort Worth’s Modern Art Museum.

What about Ben Stiller’s new movie, Night at the Museum, a film about a security guard who mistakenly triggers an ancient curse that brings to life all the human statues and deceased animals in a museum. The monsters then descend on the city and terrorize the citizens.

Probably would have been a hit and much better had it been an animated feature instead.
