You Love To Hate Us
I am currently working on a client project for the National Jeans Company, a seller of female clothing. I pitched them a one-minute animated music video about the scandolous celebrities that America loves to hate… it’s going to be called “Live Natty”.
The song for “Live Natty” was recorded with my frequent musical collaborator Micah Frank (who also did the fabulous music for my Kosher.com cartoon). Let me tell you; this song is so catchy and so accurately girl-poppy that I’m making the whole world wait to hear it. If the song got out it would end up being on the radio by the time I finished the animation. “Live Natty” will debut in February.
The Year Of The Cartoon
This came to me in a vision. A cosmic sign from the gods. 2007 is the year of the cartoon. I’m about to embark on a quest of cartoon amazingness. It won’t be easy, but neither were the journeys of Gilgamesh, Beowulf, Perseus, or Frodo. 29.97 ideas per second. Come join me on the adventure
More explanation to follow… stay tuned.
The New Republic Christmas card
Since we’re somewhere between an exciting Election Day and Christmas, I thought it would be an appropriate time to blog about this old cartoon. A couple years ago, the political magazine The New Republic asked me to do an animated Christmas card. There’s not too much to explain beyond that.
Fred-Ex is on Youtube
For anyone who missed the world-premiere on the Channel Frederator podcast, “Fred-Ex: the Secret Life of Robots” has now made it to Youtube for all the world to see.
Not to reiterate everything that’s been said already about Fred-Ex on the blogs, but this cartoon is something special. 15 directors from 5 continents. Every kind of animation technique. And it’s damn funny.
On a side note, this is the first time I noticed how annoying it is that YouTube chooses the frame from the exact middle of the movie to be the default sample frame. Look at what the middle frame for “Fred-Ex” is: a black screen that says “pregnancy”. It’s not exactly the most exciting screenshot, is it?
P.S. Lee and and I are getting ready to start up Fred-Ex 2. If you’re a director who’s interested in being part of it, now’s the time to say so.
The Museum of Natural Mystery
This post is not about cartoons but it is. Once in a while, every cartoonist needs a jolt of inspiration. There’s no better place to get inspired in New York than the Museum of Natural History. It has some of the weirdest, most amazing items on earth, such as that gruesome fish up there. I went there this weekend with my camera and collected future cartoon material. Here’s a couple examples:
