Making money with YouTube (or at least trying to)

December 21st, 2008

YouTube recently expanded their pool of partners. I’m swimming in the pool right now. In order to make money on your clips, the only limitations are that you have to own the rights to what you are uploading, and the clips need to be over 30 seconds in length. You also have to sign up for a Google Adwords account in order to get paid.

The other thing is that you have to have some popular videos and quite a few subscribers in order to be accepted into the program. While it’s no Internet People, my halloween video The Happy Pumpkin has over 600,000 views. Ironically, this video doesn’t qualify for revenue sharing, since it is under 30 seconds in length. I fell it was responsible for most of my subscribers though.

One of the cooler features that gets added to your YouTube account is the ability to track your videos. Are people watching it all the [Read more…]

Milking It

October 27th, 2008

We’re all familiar with the classic “Got Milk?” campaign, which was sponsored by the California Milk Processor Board. Now another scrappy milk-promoting trade group, the British Columbia Dairy Foundation, is promoting a video contest on YouTube.

To enter, make a video with the message “Must Drink More Milk” and upload it to YouTube. Each month, two winners will be named. At the end of the year, one Grand Prize winner will win a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air (with Final Cut Pro). Oh yeah, you MUST BE A RESIDENT OF BRITISH COLUMBIA to enter.

I really like the video above, a stop motion fight scene where our underdog champion is a claymation version of one of those wobblies monsters you stick on the end of a pencil. I wish the BCDF would credit the animators and make it clear that eight YouTube videos most prominently posted were done by pros and had “real budgets” and the supervision of an advertising agency. The fight scene is by at Bent Image Lab. (Chel White, Ray Di Carlo, and David Daniels formed this Portland, Oregon studio in 2003.)

For more information about the contest, go to the milkvids YouTube page or the mustdrinkmoremilk website.

PS: For an online gallery of the classic milk mustache ads, check out this link.

PPS: Here are some earlier spots for the BCDF with animation direction by Curious Pictures.

After the jump, another Bent Image Labs video, starring Russian nesting dolls with very annoying voices. And a few videos by an actual contest entrants. [Read more…]

Take YouTube videos with you

October 19th, 2008

If you’re an animation fan like me, you want to watch great cartoons whenever you get the chance. I recently flew to New York from San Diego, and had around 5 hours with nothing to do but sit there. I grabbed my PSP and headed to YouTube (though any mobile device capable of playing .mp4 files will work).

Using a free service called KeepVid, I grabbed several animation related films for the trip. This will drop the videos you link to onto your hard drive in the directory of your choice. You then transfer the video to your mobile device using the same procedures you have been using. Happy watching!

Ad for “Wario Land: Shake It” breaks the fourth wall

September 24th, 2008

Warioland Shake It

You have to see this to believe it. It is hard to explain without ruining it. If you are a YouTube user (and who isn’t), then you will want to watch this.

The marketing people at Nintendo knocked this one out of the park.
