Animation Spotlight on Anton Bogaty

September 10th, 2009

This week’s animation spotlight with Anton Bogaty is pretty sweet. Below is a brief Q & A about the films in this episode.

To read more about Anton, check out his past CF interviews here and here.

Channel Frederator: In the episode you say that “Dee” was a song inspired by the singer’s relationship with his grandmother. Can you elaborate on your process - how that information lead to a giant floating robot full of zombies?

Anton Bogaty: I squandered a lot of the time that I had to work on the video by jumping between several animatics, trying to decide which storyline to go with. Daniel Harmann mentioned how the song was inspired by the passing of his grandmother and I had three different animatics that involved the deterioation of and eventual passing of a grandparent. The storyline of the girl chasing down a floating craft of some sort was an old idea that I [Read more…]

Channel Frederator Animator Spotlight: Anton Bogaty!

September 8th, 2009

All of this week’s films come from one, count ‘em ONE animator – low budget animation wiz Anton Bogaty! The episode features intros and film facts from Anton himself, not to mention the animations are RADical with a capital RAD.

Leave lots of comments and don’t forget to follow us on Twitter!

“Dee” - Music video for Daniel G. Harmann and the Troublestarts. The song was inspired by the singer’s relationship to his grandmother. Anton ran with it and came up with a floating robot ship full of zombies.

“Manning” – A trip to the mall becomes a different kind of “trip” after an unsuspecting teen is given a second sight by a creepy old man.

“Under the Noodle” – You will never think of carbo loading the same way again.

“Nothing Personal (We’ve All Got to Eat)” – Don’t you just hate it when you’re trying to go about your business and hallucinations keep haunting your [Read more…]

Seafarin’ Jim Dirshberger

September 4th, 2009

Animator Jim Dirshberger collaborated with artists Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock to create “The Seafarers - Sea of Love”, a story set on the high seas. This tale has it all: Action! Adventure! Animatronic genitalia?

CF: Tell us a little somethin’ ’bout yourself.

Jim Dirshberger: I’m a filmmaker/animator living in San Francisco. I’m currently directing an animated web series called the Forest City Rockers and I produce short films which can be seen on my website.

SF is a kind city with lots of great artists who are eager to collaborate, it’s a great place for an animator like myself. The artists, Ferris Plock and Kelly Tunstall, were not only eager but they’re also extremely talented. I’m very fortunate to have worked with them.

CF: I love the design of the Seafarer’s seafarin’ jalopy. Where did you draw your inspiration from for the style of the film?

JD: I approached this as an adventure story. Most of my inspiration came [Read more…]

“Mawnstirrs and Rowboughts” Art Show in Los Angeles

May 14th, 2009

monsters_robots

Joe David Torres recently let everyone on RAW know about an awesome art show he’s putting together. From Joe’s post:

A bunch of us are doing a group art show called “Mawnstirrs and Rowboughts” aka Monsters and… ROBOTS!!! Yes I said it, robots!!!

The artists participating in the show will convey just how those two icons of human culture (monsters and robots) touched their personal lives and helped inspire and shape them as artists. They show will not be one versus the other, or one with the other. ( but we don’t discourage pieces containing a versus theme or a companion ship between the two) but we do encourage our artist participants not to use any known characters of storylines, but to show us how they feel about the subjects!!! It will be a very unconventional show, that’s one reason we chose to spell it so weird as well. “Mawnstirrs and Rowboughts!!!”

Happy Earth Day, From Channel Frederator!

April 14th, 2009

Greetings, Earthlings.

We care about our home planet. This week’s filmmakers do, too. Even The Robot cares about it (he’s a robot, yes, but he’s still from Earth).

Let’s celebrate and protect our critter-friends in the forests, rivers, mountains, and oceans. Take public transportation, walk, turn off the lights, plant trees, buy locally grown food – however, you should know the single most important thing you can do for the planet today… is watch cartoons.

Ratatat - “Seventeen Years”, submitted by Michael A. Chico
– Fun flash film where cute fuzzy animals are pitted against vicious forest chopping robots! Go Earth!

“Our Little World - The Climate Movie”, submitted by Josef Buchner
- A group of multimedia and communication design students combine ethics and animation in this fun (but crazy educational) short.

WARNING: Channel Frederator is rated EXPLICIT. Spring has sprung, people. You don’t know what you’re gonna see. Just promise us you’ll get permission

Memories of a Teenage Robot

November 15th, 2006

Frederator Veteran John Fountain, looks back on his time spent working on Rob Renzetti’s My Life As A Teenage Robot.

“I haven’t had time to do any new doodles or paintings lately, so I’m just going to wax nostalgiac.
Unfortunately, tragically and disappointingly, not all that many people are familair with the show ‘My Life as a Teenage Robot’.
It was created by Rob Renzetti who, apart from just being an overall good guy, has been instrumental in shaping some of the better cartoons from the last decade or more.
‘Robot’ was, originally, part of the ‘Oh Yeah! Cartoons!’ anthology series on Nickelodeon.
Anyway, it became a series and I had the honor of working on it in a number of capacities.
Rob let me write, direct, storyboard and - oftentimes - design entire characters. Rob was one of those rare directors who was able to step back, hire folks he trusted and just let them run.
