The Making of Brandon Ray’s “The Land Eaters”

June 5th, 2009

This week, Channel Frederator features a unique animation that combines puppetry and green screen magic called “The Land Eaters” by Brandon Ray. Lucky for us, Brandon documented his process, and called it -

The Land Eaters is my most recent animated digital short. There wasn’t a whole lot of cerebral planning involved… my inspiration for the story stemmed from my fundamental concept of nature- consumptive, cruel, yet somehow beautiful (much like Werner Herzog’s assessment of nature in Grizzly Man). My starting point for the narrative came from a series of paintings my wife Lisa did while she was in Buenos Aires, Argentina last year studying abroad. In front of those gorgeous landscapes, I could see some sort of dark & twisted plot unraveling.

In terms of aesthetics and technique, I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone a little, so I limited myself on what I was allowed to ‘animate’ [Read more…]

Clever editing: politicians sing the hits

September 8th, 2008

These kinds of videos must take forever to make. There are several videos online of famous figures singing. This is achieved by splicing together bits and pieces from various interviews, speeches, and sound bites until you have all the lyrics you need.

The strange thing is that these songs seem to start to take on a whole new meaning, depending upon who is “singing” them. What do you think about pieces like these?  Are they just clever edits done by people with too much time on their hands, or are they something more?-Floyd Bishop

Big Buck Bunny

“Big Buck Bunny” has been released. Here is a bit about the film, from the official site:

As a follow-up to the successful project Orange’s “Elephants Dream”, the Blender Foundation initiated another open movie project. Again a small team (7) of the best 3D artists and developers in the Blender community have been invited to come together to work in Amsterdam from October 2007 until April 2008 on completing a short 3D animation movie. The team members will get a great studio facility and housing in Amsterdam, all travel costs reimbursed, and a fee sufficient to cover all expenses during the period.

Unofficial music video: Jefferson Airplane - “White Rabbit”

May 8th, 2008

Have a look at this video. It’s got the Jefferson Airplane song White Rabbit, mixed with visuals from Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland”.  The results are great, with each part making the other stronger.

I’ve fixed the post. As Joey pointed out in the comments, it was Jefferson Airplane, NOT Jefferson Starship.

Reasons #168, #169, and #170 why Mukpuddy is awesome.

These spots are actually clever ads for the new videogame “Condemned 2″.

The tongue in cheek approach to sugar coating the violent nature of the real game is a unique take on the promotion.

Maybe some of the Muks can chime in here and fill us in on the process involved with these spots?

This interview was a treat for me to do because Alex Kirwan was one of my first champions and also the catalyst for me to get into Calarts’ animation program. His character design class was one of my fondest and funnest memories of Calarts. Alex was and still is one of the nicest, most genuine, brightest talents in the animation industry.
