I Made it Out of “Hey!”

The best things about Hanukkah is latkes. The second is arguing about how to spell “Hanukkah” and “latkes” (not to mention “dreydl”). Third is re-watching Kyle Broflovski from South Park sing “A Lonely Jew on Christmas” (from the classic “Mr. Hankey The Christmas Poo” episode of 1997—has it been that long?) The South Park Studios site has kindly posted the song here. See a full collection of South Park Hanukkah clips here.

Zen and the Art of Animation

If you are interested in a FLASH of enlightenment, check out these Alan Watts Theater cartoons. They were produced by Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park fame. According to Cold Hard Flash, animators Chris Brion and Todd Benson are the folks who keyframed original recordings of Watts.

During World War II, animation was a popular way to rally support for the troops, educate the country about how they could help out with the war effort, and serve as propaganda for the world.

In addition to traditional length shorts, there were also several interstitial pieces created, such as “Any Bonds Today?”

As you can see, many of these cartoons featured charactures that played upon racial stereotypes… many of which are not politically correct in the eyes of today’s audiences. The big studios have gone to great lengths to keep many such cartoons as hard to find as possible for fear of a backlash. Maybe this is why we don’t see many war cartoons like we used to?
