RIP Stan Winston (1946 - 2008)

June 17th, 2008

Stan Winston

Stan Winston, special fx, creature and make-up artist has passed away after a seven-year battle with myeloma. He was 62.

Stan’s work included such movie creatures as the Terminator, the practical dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park series, and special effects in “Iron Man”.

There is no word yet as to what will happen with Stan Winston Studio, which has been hard at work on several upcoming films.

Hulk cartoon from 1966

June 16th, 2008

While the new “Incredible Hulk” film follows the television show sequence of events, this 1966 cartoon shows the true Hulk origin from the comic books. Some things change because of artistic direction, and some things change because world events are not what they were when stories like these were first written. That being said, there was a Hulk film in 2003 by the same studio. What has changed this time around?

“The Incredible Hulk” was the top film this weekend, so we’ll have to wait and see how it does during it’s entire run when compared to the 2003 film. I still like the Kirby style art in the cartoon.

CG Clone Wars Movie coming in August

June 12th, 2008

While there is a lot of negative buzz about this film on many animation forums, the fan community is eagerly awaiting the release of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”. While I wasn’t too excited about this project when I first heard about it, the newer trailers look promising.

It really would have been nice to see a theatrical release of the 2D Clone Wars series which ran on Cartoon Network a few years back.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to the new film?

“Kung Fu Panda” beats Hollywood projections

June 9th, 2008

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that “Kung Fu Panda” has grabbed the #1 spot at the box office this weekend with an estimated $60 million domestically.

From the article:

Outpaced by a pair of sequels in the animation studio’s “Shrek” franchise and a four-day bow for 2005’s “Madagascar,” “Panda” had pre-release expectations more comparable to DWA’s family comedy “Over the Hedge.” “Hedge” opened in May 2006 with $38.5 million.

The “Panda” debut included $2.3 million rung up from 89 of Imax’s giant-screen venues.

Did you see “Kung Fu Panda”? If so, what did you think of the film? Write up your take on it in the comments section.

WALL·E NBA spot

June 8th, 2008

If you have been watching the basketball match up between Boston and LA, then you’ve probably seen this spot for “WALL·E”. The more I see of this character, the more interested I am in the film. WALL·E doesn’t seem to have a whole lot to work with in terms of physical poseability, but the range of expression that the Pixar animators are able to get out of the character is great.

Be sure to check out “WALL·E” when it hits theaters on June 27th.

May 30th, 2008

Reposted from Indy Mogul!

Not to sound too much like a shameless plug, but our friend Rob Schrab (who recently put together an episode of the 4-minute Film School) is encouraging fans to recreate the energy of his popular comic book series “SCUD: The Disposable Assassin” by means of a fan film contest. Rob co-created Channel 101, so he knows how valuable deadlines and obstructions can be to creating something.

If you’re a fan of Scud, or just like making stuff, check out all the information on his site. You can make whatever you want about SCUD, make it three minutes or less in length, and send him a link by July 31st.

WARNING! INCOMING GAME! “ReBoot” Makes A Come Back

May 30th, 2008

reboot season 1

The cult hit (and WAY ahead of it’s time) television series “ReBoot” is poised to make a come back. For those that don’t know the show, it was the first 100% CG series on television. It ran from 1994 to 2001. It celebrated all things computers, and is thus a great geek show.

From the site for the new film:

The last television episode of ReBoot aired in November of 2001 with a cliffhanger episode that left viewers wanting more. Through websites and online forums, die-hard fans continued to speculate, predict and in some cases fictionalize the next chapter in the ReBoot story.

Fast forward to 2007. Rainmaker Entertainment teamed with Zeros 2 Heroes Media to give ReBoot fans the power to decide which of five new concepts have the most merit. Over four weeks, thousands of comments, ratings, blog posts and votes poured in.

If you were a fan of the series, head on over to the site and give [Read more…]
