San Diego Comic Con 2008
The San Diego Comic Con has come and gone. It was pretty busy, with the entire show selling out. Preview Night was just as busy (if not more so) than any other day. I would love to see some sort of expansion of the Con to cut back on crowd size. Maybe a professionals only night, or perhaps making the Con a full week?

My Big Mocca Score!
Here’s some of the loot I got from the great Mocca Art Festival this year in NYC.

First off, here’s the cover to the mini I printed up to hand out to people. I guess I was inspired by Stephen Levinson’s gun-toting, wise ass Skunk, Prikk. The comic was called, Box Assassin Hitman: Box of Danger!!!
People seemed delighted to be given a free mini about a cardboard robot who can transform into a box and is a deadly hitman assassin. [Read more…]
Lynda Barry’s Tour de Forces Beyond Our Control
Going to see Lynda Barry is like going to see the Dalai Lama. (Actually, I’ve never gone to see the Dalai Lama, but I plan on doing so the next time he’s in town to see if he could possible be more inspiring than the personality-packed “Funk Queen of the Universe”.) Lynda was in NYC this weekend to promote What It Is, which is likely the world’s first collage how-to-write book. She was interviewed by Hillary Chute Friday Night at the NYU Post Bang all-day comics symposium, and had the audience in stitches the entire time—but in a deep way!
The book is not specific to animation, but applicable to any artistic endeavor. It is all about how to recapture the playful attitude to creativity that we all have in childhood, but lose along the way, especially when we start looking at our work and judging it. (Or, as she put it [Read more…]
Meaty Animation by Gary Leib
Comic book artist and funky animation whiz Gary Leib has a short currently playing on The New York Times website: a fluid and funny visual riff about how the meatpacking district has changed over the years. Gary emailed me to say that this is the first in a series of four original cartoons. “Each piece is about a minute long, and is a very personal take on different parts of New York.” Gary runs Twinkle, a flash animation production company. He’s produced animation for the American Splendor movie and They Might Be Giant’s Dr. Worm video. He also co-created the comic book series Idiotland (with Doug Allen). Click here to enjoy sundry creatures, human and otherwise, cavorting through the centuries.
Rob Schrab’s Fan Film Contest
Reposted from Indy Mogul!
Not to sound too much like a shameless plug, but our friend Rob Schrab (who recently put together an episode of the 4-minute Film School) is encouraging fans to recreate the energy of his popular comic book series “SCUD: The Disposable Assassin” by means of a fan film contest. Rob co-created Channel 101, so he knows how valuable deadlines and obstructions can be to creating something.
If you’re a fan of Scud, or just like making stuff, check out all the information on his site. You can make whatever you want about SCUD, make it three minutes or less in length, and send him a link by July 31st.
Cartoonist Ryan Sias.
Ryan Sias has over 400 Silent Kimby cartoons and his main site showcases a bunch of his other illustration. He’s self published both black & white and color Kimbys on Lulu.com. His cartoons have appeared in Mad Magazine, Nickelodeon Magazine, Found Magazine, and the “Flight Anthology” for Image Comics. And that’s aside from his work on movies ranging from Robots to Bowling for Columbine.
Channel Frederator #78
May Day Channel Frederator Confessional: “When my sister was around five, she had a bear that would start singing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star if you squeezed its paw. One day, I snuck into her room, squeezed the bear’s paw when her back was turned, and dove under her bed to hide. I did this three times. Scared, she called my mom into the room to explain that her bear was magically singing without her touching it, and my mom accused her of lying.”
— Hey Look!, submitted by Vincent Waller. An Oh Yeah! Cartoon adaptation of one of Harvey Kurtzman’s comic strips.
— Bad Dad, submitted by Tasha Hollywood. Why is it that little British kids always sound so cute with their accents? They could be telling us to go to hell, and we’d just want to pinch their cheeks.
