March 23rd, 2009

cotm.jpg

It’s that time again! Time to announce our March Cartoon of the Month. We had a really great variety of films that were contenders this month - bears, cars, ghosts, goldfish, narwhals, cupcakes and more. Honestly, though, in the end we all know that cupcakes RULE! So it’s really no surprise that Kirsten Lepore is taking home the totally sweet $100 prize-pack of exclusive Cartoon of the Month Channel Frederator merchandise for her film, Sweet Dreams.
Kirsten was Channel Frederator’s first featured filmmaker in episode #166. Our very own Bailee DesRocher did an awesome two part interview with Kirsten where she tells all about this great film. Make sure you check it out here, and here.
I also asked Kirsten what kind of advice she has for any of you creative filmmakers out there that want to win the Cartoon of the Month prize yourself. She says:

Story is key. Oftentimes you have to [Read more…]

Congratulations to Felipe Zuleta! His film, Big Eater, takes home February’s Cartoon of the Month Prize! Featured in Channel Frederator episode 166, this film follows an epic eating battle. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you might get a little bit hungry.
Felipe will be the recipient of an awesome $100 prize-pack of exclusive Channel Frederator merchandise. I asked Felipe if he had any advice for other budding filmmakers who want to win this prestigious award as well. Felipe’s adice was:

Well, do your best! put everything into your work so you can be proud of it and have no regrets, then bug, bug, and… bug everyone to go into Channel Frederator, see and rate your work! then pray (that’s what I did :P)

For more about Felipe and his film, check out the great interview that our very own Bailee DesRocher did with Felipe by clicking here. And don’t forget, your film could [Read more…]

turducken.jpg

Oh wait… it’s not a turkey! It’s Turducken… What is a Turducken you ask? It’s the infamous yet delectable bird within a bird within a bird - duck stuffed inside a chicken which is then stuffed inside a turkey. Only in America folks!
Steve Stark celebrates the invincibility of the Turducken in his film, Turducken. Turducken takes home the prize for the December Cartoon of the Month - the highest rated cartoon to run in all of November. This includes episodes 152, 153, 154 and 155.  Hailing from episode 155, our Thanksgiving celebration episode, Steve created Turduken because…. well… maybe I should just let Steve tell you. Read his interview below!

What inspired you to create Turducken?

While I was going to school for animation, I was working at Cactus Club here in Vancouver.  My buddy Matty told me a story about how his friend ate a Turducken over the weekend.  It blew my mind.  So I [Read more…]

rajesh.jpg

Us artsy types don’t have a reputation for being punctual… but we still feel bad that we’re late as all get out in announcing November’s Cartoon of the Month!
November’s candidates include episodes 148, 149, 150, and 151 of Channel Frederator. There was some serious competition, but in the end, “Monster Ball“, created by Rajesh. Congratulations Rajesh! A graduate of Vancouver Film School, Rajesh put a lot of work into “Monster Ball” the short where three robots are nothing against an adorable kitty. I did a brief interview with Rajesh, and here’s the lowdown on him and his film:

CF: What inspired you to create “Monster Ball”?

“Monster Ball” was a short comic I created during my days at VFS (Vancouver film school ) , The story was of a boy playing soccer with his cat ,however more and more characters kept adding on to the story till it became the short it is [Read more…]

October’s Cartoon of the Month!

November 3rd, 2008

Hot Town by Fab Dores
So I’m a bit late on posting the October Cartoon of the Month winner, but this one is worth the wait. We had 5 episodes that ran in September, making them eligible for the October prize.
The October Cartoon of the Month prize comes from episode 145 and goes to the cartoon Hot Town by Fabian Dores Pais! Hot Town is a fabulous example of how simple, yet creative and well executed animation can take the cake. I had the chance to ask Fab a few questions about his cartoon and animation in general. Check out his answers below!

What inspired you to create “Hot Town”?

I was inspired by the music  called “Hot Town” by Fess Williams and his Royal Flush Orchestra. I wanted to work in the same way as the old cartoons based on the rhythm. I only listened to the music and some ideas appears in my mind. What techniques did you use to create it, and about how long did it take? [Read more…]

Pushkin Takes Home the Prize!

August 19th, 2008

pushkin.jpg

I’m really excited to announce this month’s winner of the Cartoon of the Month prize! We had 8 films from episodes 136, 137 and 138 in the running this time - a bit low because of the Channel Frederator Awards, but nonetheless stiff competition! In the end, Pushkin took home the prize!
Pushkin is a great stop motion film brought to us by Trevor Hardy of Fool Hardy Films. I took a few minutes to do a mini-interview with Trevor below. Check it out and then, if you haven’t had the chance to watch it, or haven’t seen it in a while, go watch Pushkin again in Channel Frederator episode 136.

CF: What inspired you to create Pushkin?

I came up for the story line for Pushkin after losing my own cat who thank fully returned a while later but with bent whiskers??? (Don’t ask me?), whilst writing pushkin I watched Sylvain Chomet’s brilliant film, ‘The Triplets of Belleville’ and of course his sets and atmosphere totally inspired me and helped carve the look of the world Pushkin would live in.

July 17th, 2008

rainbow.jpg

I can feel it from here, you guys are EXCITED about the cartoon of the month. Particularly exciting is the fact that, because of the Channel Frederator Awards, we have only ONE episode of new content that aired in June! That means only three cartoons - stiff competition.
Episode 135 aired on Channel Frederator on June 3rd and had three awfully creative cartoons, so voting was SUPER close! Lenny Boudreau, our tireless Drinking & Drawing Boston host brought us the latest in drunken cartoon tomfoolery. From filmmaker, Tomagibo, comes Save the Princess. This creative and hysterical claymation will keep you on the edge of your seat!
Last, but certainly not least, Paul Shih brings us Rainbow Monster - our winner!! This super-cute cartoon has two lessons: 1) You are what you eat. 2) How to poop rainbows. A long-time resident of New Zealand, Paul is famous for his cute characters and his very cool paper cutouts [Read more…]
