Clive McFarland’s short “Tom’s Fridge” is strange and sentimental. A sweet appliance-based film like this hasn’t come along since The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars…

Where did you study animation/film?

Clive McFarland: I learnt a lot of useful things at Liverpool School of Art & Design. (http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/lsa/graphicarts)

What have you the idea for “Tom’s Fridge”?

CM: I found something encouraging everyone to recycle their fridge if it was over ten years old as it wasn’t energy efficient and was bad for the environment. I wondered if it would be so easy to say goodbye to your fridge if you had lived with it for ten years.

Are you working on anything new you can tell us about?

CM: At the minute I’m working on a music video about a boy who wants to live on the moon. It’s a cut out stop motion animation but this time I’m animating on a light table using translucent coloured plastics, which is a really cool technique. The story is set in a dream environment so anything can happen!

What household appliance would make you cry if it broke down?

CM: My toaster because he is a real pal. Also I eat a lot of toast.

Anything you’d like to add?

CM: Yes, I’d like to say thank you very much for featuring my animation. Want some toast?

Totally. Thanks for the interview, Clive!
