Mysteries of Pig City Revealed!

June 10th, 2009

“The Mystery of Pig City” is a film fest favorite created by Garth Jones and Johnny Luu. We caught up with Garth to shoot the breeze about the film and various mystery meats.

Channel Frederator: Where did you study animation?

Garth Jones: Johnny and I both studied at the International Film School of Wales, in Newport.

CF: Who or what has influenced your style the most?

GJ: At the time I had just seen UPA’s “Gerald McBoing Boing” which was a massive influence - it also showed me a world of amazing animation designers like Mary Blair and more recent artists like Tim Biskup. All the backgrounds in “Pig City” were ‘cut-out’ in Photoshop which was a fun limitation to keep everything in the same style.

CF: What gave you the idea for “Pig City”?

GJ: “Pig City” is a sloppily painted sign somewhere in Doreset on the side of a pig sty. Strangely the name stuck and the story of a pig stealing cats and turning them into sausages grew from the name. I’m not really sure how, although it can’t be a coincidence that I’m a vegetarian.

CF: Do you have any upcoming projects you can tell us about?

GJ: I’m currently working on a series of Pixel Films with my partner Ginny, we’re knee deep in number 3 so far! The idea is to create a series of films using only 50×50 pixels!

You can watch Pixel Films here!

CF: If sausages are made of cats, could you tell me what these other meat products are actually made of?

Cafeteria grade Salisbury Steak:
GJ: The Luckiest of Sea Gulls.

Bologna:
GJ: Soylent Green, of course.

Spam:
GJ: Space Ham.

CF: That’s it, I’m going vegetarian too.

Thanks for the interview, Garth! You can watch Garth Jone’s and Johnny Luu’s film “The Mystery of Pig City” right here on Channel Frederator!
