Guilherme Ghilardi’s sweet and simple student film, “Step by Step”, has generated a lot buzz on Channel Frederator! Here he tells us a little about his style and why he thinks less is more.

Channel Frederator: Is there a particular teacher who really helped you with your work?

Guilherme Ghilardi: Yes, I created all the story, ideas and characters but I had problem, I have never used flash as an animation tool before. So Edwin Poon helped me to learn the basic steps of the software.

CF: What has influenced your style the most?

GG: I think everything you watch influences you one way or another, so it´s hard to pick a specific artist or movie. But guys like Paul Driessen and others; I like them because they use only the essential to tell a story. I always try to make things as simple as I can.

I believe that what has most influenced my style, is the fact that I don´t have patience to work with close shapes and bodies. I mean, I believe that lines and random shapes can show/express emotions and acting skills in a simple and easiest way than a close and standard shape, as a head or a character body with many details for example.

CF: Where did you get the idea for “Step by Step”?

GG: It was a really tight schedule; we had less than a week to come up with a complete storyboard. I guess it was something that just came up. I decided to make a simple story about a relationship; simple steps that motivate boys and girls to know each other.

CF: What do you plan do to when you graduate?

GG: I really want to work with animation. I have some experience with business from college and my previous job, so I was hoping to open a small studio sometime soon. I would love to work with commercials and music videos.
But the main goal is to keep learning about animation as much as I can.

Good luck, Guilherme! You can check out his film, “Step by Step” right here on Channel Frederator!
