Bouman Studios‘ “La Mañana Maldita” is a hilarious horror story… without a happy ending. The film’s director, José Martínez, chats with us about what inspires his work, what freaks him out, and what’s next.

Channel Frederator: Where did you study animation?

Bouman (José Martínez): From when I was small I liked to draw and did my little things. I learned how to [draw on my own]. I did a couple of shorts before entering a school where I did Bang! but I think self-taught after the experience.

CF: Who or what has influenced your work the most?

B: My brother, who is two years older than me, we started to draw, and the Japanese animation series that I saw on TV. Once I grew up, I saw Bill Plympton’s films and it is thanks to him that I was encouraged.

CF: What gave you the idea for this film?

B: [It was] done for a contest to make a short film in just three days. I did it with a screenwriter friend, David Muñoz. [The film] had to include the word/concept of “time”. And David came up with the idea of a boy haunted by his nightmare, a monster, all over the house. It occurred to me to include more monsters in this story and a shocking ending.

CF: Can you talk about any upcoming projects?

B: I have many projects open, a possible animated series for the Internet with stories of a well-known comic writer of Spain, Hernán Migoya. A possible series of short chapters to the 6 local TV Catalonia in Spain with David Muñoz. But it is guaranteed that the shortfilm is very advanced, design and history of a comic book artist of Spain, Felipe Almendros, and animated by me, his title is ‘Limite Bipolar‘. It tells the story of a man who looks like a woman to kill the other side of the street.

What is the worst thing that could happen to you first thing in the morning?

B: I get out of bed and did not have my hands, how could continue drawing?
