Another KO from Anton Bogaty
Director/animator Anton Bogaty returns to Channel Frederator in this week’s episode with “Take Me”, a cool retro music video for the Portland based band, Weight of Atlas. Anton talks to CF about his process for creating the video and who he’d knock out if given the chance.
Channel Frederator: How did you develop the concept for this music video?
Anton Bogaty: To be honest, I didn’t have much time to pull this one together so the thought of a small boxing match with two characters against a mostly black background became appealing. The main boxer was originally just going to have flashbacks of his recently deceased wife throughout the match as opposed to having her spirit actually appear. The idea of the mob buying him off was a much larger element but got stripped out more and more and replaced by the boxer running around after the yellow light.
Editing is what I enjoy most about making movies and in this one the scenes and events got shuffled around every which way possible to make it work on any level. I had about another minute’s worth of scenes that I wanted to squeeze in but couldn’t since I was limited to the length of the song. Originally everything built up to the car crash that took his wife’s life, which was caused by the mob, and ended on a more depressing note which is usually the route I like to take. I tried to end on a more promising thought with this one even though the main character presumably dies in the end.
CF: How collaborative is the process between you and the musicians, if at all?
AB: Most of the time, after trading initial ideas or thoughts about the video’s content, the musicians let me take things any direction I wish. I keep the band updated on the progress as I go in case they have any suggestions. I never seem to have the luxury of too much time to work on any one video so I can’t get too elaborate but they’re always a chance for fun experiments.
CF: If you could punch somebody right now, without consequence, who would it be?
AB: My doppelganger, for enjoying life more than I am whether or not he truly is. I’d still fear the consequences though.
CF: Are you working on anything cool at the moment that you can share with us?
AB: I’ve been working on a longer personal film that will probably take until Oct. of this year to finish. This is the film that I want to be able to stand naked on and say “This is what I can do” with. Another short of mine called “Gumms” is getting audio at the moment and should be finished in a month or so. There’s also another music video on my schedule that should be finished by April if I can ever get to it.
CF: Anything you’d like to add?
AB: I simply appreciate the chance to briefly be a part of the Channel Frederator family. Thanks.
Thank you, Anton!
