Nick Bachman

Stop-motion whiz-kid Nick Bachman gushes about his favorite artists, his film “Chocolate and Mices”, and why he’d submit himself to death by cookies.

Channel Frederator: What was it like studying under Schell Hickel, a Will Vinton Studios alum?

Nick Bachman: It was really a great experience. Schell is a very talented sculptor and animator, plus he’s the perfect guy to joke with while waiting for clay to melt. I couldn’t have animated the piece without his teaching, so big thanks to him!

CF: Who has influenced your work the most?

NB: Jim Henson will always be my biggest influence. He had an unbelievable imagination and never stopped pushing forward with his creativity and venturing into new territory. I also always enjoy gawking at the work of Mary Blair, Basil Gogos, Brian Froud, and Sid & Marty Krofft. On a slightly more contemporary note, I’m a big fan of what I’ve seen from JG Quintel and Pendleton Ward as well.

CF: What is your favorite animation?

NB: Most of my favorite cartoons are 60’s Hanna-Barbera, specifically Jonny Quest, Yogi Bear, Snagglepuss, and The Flintstones. I love bad jokes, really any joke that could have a wah-ing trombone play after the punchline is delivered, so those old HB shows really hit the spot.

CF: Can you tell us about any upcoming projects?

NB: Sure! I’m currently working on finishing my Senior Project animation, tentatively called “The Owl and the Squirrel” until I can think of a good title. It’s a Flash-animated short about an extremely hungry, yet overly cautious and nervous owl who attempts to make a meal out of a friendly and apathetic squirrel. Should be finished in April, keep your eyes peeled.

CF: What is your favorite food, and what would you be willing to go through to get it?

NB: Oreos. I’d be willing to subject my body to a deathwish all-Oreo diet if it meant I could get a lifetime supply of them.
