December’s Cartoon of the Month - What a Turkey!

December 18th, 2008

turducken.jpg

Oh wait… it’s not a turkey! It’s Turducken… What is a Turducken you ask? It’s the infamous yet delectable bird within a bird within a bird - duck stuffed inside a chicken which is then stuffed inside a turkey. Only in America folks!
Steve Stark celebrates the invincibility of the Turducken in his film, Turducken. Turducken takes home the prize for the December Cartoon of the Month - the highest rated cartoon to run in all of November. This includes episodes 152, 153, 154 and 155.  Hailing from episode 155, our Thanksgiving celebration episode, Steve created Turduken because…. well… maybe I should just let Steve tell you. Read his interview below!

What inspired you to create Turducken?

While I was going to school for animation, I was working at Cactus Club here in Vancouver.  My buddy Matty told me a story about how his friend ate a Turducken over the weekend.  It blew my mind.  So I asked him what
it was and he told me it was a chicken stuffed into a duck stuffed into a turkey.  I thought it sounded like a wicked cop name, so ran downstairs and drew up the police chief yelling “You’re off the case Turducken!”

Turducken was born.

What techniques did you use to create it and how long did it take?

I drew this whole cartoon with a pencil and paper.  That’s how I roll.old school yeaaah!!

To paint the characters I scanned in the drawings into ToonBoom Studio and the BG’s were all painted by hand with Gouache.

I took me about 8 months or so.  Working on it after work and such.  Fun!

Can you name a few artists, animators or other creatives that inspire you?

Seth Macfarlane is awesome. I love Family Guy, It’s all about the funny.

Brad Neely’s cartoons are genius.  I’m a huge fan.

Ren and Stimpy, Beavis and Butthead, SNL TV funhouse, Spike & Mike Sick and Twisted shorts were huge influences on getting me into animation.

Any advice for hopeful animators that want to win Channel Frederator’s Cartoon of the Month prize themselves some day?

You have to train!!  Drink raw eggs from a glass,  Punch frozen meat and Jog all over the place.  Then when you’re done all that….you should probably draw.

What did you have for lunch today?

An entire Grizzly bear and 2 cubs.  It was an intense meal.  Especially since they were all alive when I swallowed them.  Talk about indigestion! Woo!

What a great interview… Thanks Steve! Congratulations to Steve for winning our December Cartoon of the Month prize and best of luck to all of you up for our January prize. Don’t forget to vote, folks! - Carrie
