Paul Newman passes away

Paul Newman has passed away after a long battle with cancer. While he was famous for such great films as “The Hustler”, “Cool Hand Luke”, and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, many animation fans will remember him as the voice of Doc Hudson from Disney/Pixar’s “Cars”.

Perhaps more impressive and meaningful than his film roles was his work as a philanthropist. He launched a line of products (starting with salad dressing) under the brand Newman’s Own. All of the profits from these products, after taxes, was donated to charity. The line has expanded to include many other products, such as popcorn and salsa. One benificiary of the Newman’s Own program is The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a summer camp in Connecticut for seriously ill children.
Paul Newman also co-sponsors the PEN/Newman’s Own First Amendment Award, a $25,000 reward to people who protect the first amendment, as it applies to the written word.
Paul Newman was a great actor who also gave back to the world. He was 83.
