Jeaux’s SXSW poster.

April 26th, 2008

Everyone who keeps up Channel Frederator knows how hip Jeaux Janovsky is, and the sharper eyed among you know how great an artist he is (just check out the cool CFA illos he’s been doing for the blog or his Drinking & Drawing poster). Jeaux’s not one to brag so it’s down to me that we haven’t posted this great poster he did for and Chan. Fred’s parent Next New Networks’ party (with our friends at Tumblr) at South by Southwest in March. His inspired modern take on the classic Filmore Auditorium psychedelic posters from the 60s quickly became the most collectible item at the SXSW conference.

Cartoon Silhouettes

Bob Flynn posted this exercise on his blog, and I thought is was worth a post here.

Here is what Bob had to say:

I have a fun game for everyone to play that could also be educational. If you click on the above image, you’ll find silhouettes of 34 different cartoon characters. Even at the small size all of them should be recognizable (which in itself is an amazing feat—for the characters, and your BRAIN!). I’ve talked a little about character design on this blog. I wanted to test the theory that a memorable character, one that is entirely unique and original, will have some semblance of strong design. Which boils down to having contrasting shapes and forms, which in turn should reduce to a distinctive silhouette. This isn’t perfectly scientific, because pop culture presence, humor, voice, and writing all play a role in constructing the perfect character. But I’m [Read more…]

Our second Category is Best Music Video.

Betcha didn’t know that Fred wanted to be a scientist before he became a bonafide cartoon hit-maker!
He had us all in labcoats conducting a bunch of scientific research, tests and experiments to discover the DNA that makes up the “perfect” music video.

The prognosis looks good.

Here are our findings:
A) If it’s got a song, you can’t go wrong.
B) Go take a chance, cause folks love to dance.
C) You don’t need to cut to the beat to make the film a bona fide treat.
D) Give it a tune, the major record labels will be calling soon.
E) If you want a video [Read more…]

New Earthworm Jim animated series, game, and feature!

April 24th, 2008

Wired is reporting (and creator Doug TenNapel is confirming) that there is a new video game, new series, and new feature all in the works for Earthworm Jim.

When asked on his forum: “Just wondering, what made you go back to Jim after all these years? I thought you were pretty much done with the character.”

Doug had the following to say:

I was done because I had no control/reason to develop. Now he’s mine again so there’s a reason to develop him further. Notice, I said DEVELOP. That means he’s going places and I’m not here to repeat what my pals and I did 15 years ago.

Interplay is being really cool…they’re hungry, so they want to see Jim fly again. That’s a different strategy than just sitting on a dead liscense and try to milk more re-hashes that continue to weaken the brand.

The old game was great, but there was no [Read more…]

Warhammer: Battle March Intro Movie

April 23rd, 2008

Digic Pictures is responsible for the intro to “Warhammer: Battle March”.

It’s a very ambitious piece, with some great character and set design and execution. It would be nice to see an entire feature done in this style from these guys.

Horton Hears a Cash Register

April 22nd, 2008

horton-hears-a-who-steve-carel-13948598.jpg

Variety is reporting that the Fox/Blue Sky film “Horton Hears a Who” has made $117.7 million offshore and $262 million worldwide.

Is it possible that audiences will get a follow up film, such as “Horton Hatches the Egg”? We’ll have to wait and see.
