“Pecos Pest”

March 27th, 2008

This is one of my favorite Tom & Jerry cartoons, even though it has some elements I usually hate to see in Tom & Jerry cartoons.

Usually, I don’t like the guest star type shorts. You know what I mean? The ones where a small animal shows up, Tom starts fighting with them for one reason or another, and it’s up to Jerry to keep the new guy safe. It works really well in this short though. Maybe that’s because Uncle Pecos is such a tough guy character, and he’s the one going after Tom, and not the other way around?

Another thing that shows up in this short is the impossible gag. Yes, I know that anything is possible in a cartoon, but certain rules have been established, and they shouldn’t really be broken. I think it requires an extra stretch or suspension of disbelief to a point where the viewer [Read more…]

Nick Bruno is an animator at Blue Sky Studios, the makers of hit movies including the Ice Age series, Robots and the recently released Horton Hears a Who. Bruno is responsible for a lot of the colorful animation found in Horton, as well as being one of the lead animators of the Whos. Aside from his work at Blue Sky, he is also a teacher at the online animation school Animation Mentor. Not to mention posting plenty of tips and artwork on his blog.

It’s great stuff, so why not take a look!

Hey Hey Hey! It’s Easter, 1985!

March 23rd, 2008

Have a look at this commercial break from 1985. You’ll see a promo for Fat Albert’s Easter Special, Popeye will teach you a lesson about bike safety, and Fred Flintstone will help the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children. Watch out for the scary music in the C.L.A.W. commercial!

It’s interesting to see how many public service announcements were aired during the day, as opposed to now. Another interesting note, there is a pretty cool Transformers commercial that airs, and this is during an episode of “Challenge of the Go Bots”. We all know who won that battle.

Happy Easter, everyone!

Dalmation Animation

Dalmation Animation
via Tulgey Wood
Have a look at this great illustration from the inside back cover of the comic book adaptation of Walt Disney’s “One Hundred and One Dalmatians”. Drawn by Al Hubbard (who also drew the book-length comic adaptation of the then-new animated film), “Dalmatian Animation” is a simplified explanation of the very complicated animation process.

It’s interesting to see that the way the process is shown here, the voices are added after the animation is done. While this is usually true for some foley and background or ambient sound, nearly all dialog is recorded before the animation begins. This allows the artists to match the audio exactly.

The relaunch of ReFrederator on Channel Frederator got me poking around the profile of one of my non-work blogs and it led me to the two blogs of Kevin Langley, where he posts his sketches and comments on classic animation & cartoons.

You know what? Gabe Swarr is cool. His version of everyone’s favorite mustachioed, pizza chomping, Italian plumber Mario is even cooler. As this tribute short can attest to.
